Hannah maria stringer
« on: Tuesday 24 September 24 20:34 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I was hoping somebody could help me.
I'm trying to find some information on hannah maria stringer born 1839 in sheffield. She married jacob walton (not entirely sure of the year)
She was admitted to an asylum in 1864 and died 1868 while still committed.
Wondering if anybody could find the why she was committed and why she died?
Thanks

What does her death certificate say?

(Marriage was in June quarter 1858 see freebmd).

1861 all b. Sheffield Yorks
Jacob Walton    Hannah Wife 22 ,  John Hy  Son 2  Elizabeth Dau 2m

It wasn't unusual for women to be admitted to asylums for post partum depression
(Same for the older counterparts with the madness of menopause (My poor ancestor)
Looking at 1871 she had 3 more children... If she was admitted four years prior to her death, then she was released long enough to get pregnant each time?... Imagine going through any disorder with a baby & 3 young children...then a baby with four young children.

Adding:  ( and did they move several times as well... with children? I'd likely have had several attacks of hysteria as well... Where was she institutionalized?)

Incorrect information, correction in next post

Hannah Walton wasn't buried at Matlock, she was buried at Prestwich St. Mary, 13 April 1868.
Age 29 yrs. Abode reads formerly of Manchester. From the Prestwich Lunatic Asylum.

Thank you, jonw65...have crossed out my error & pointed to your correction.

adding:
I see you are also researching this family. So Hanna was buried near the asylum with her fellow inmates, not near her home?
She was one of approx. 560 patients, so in that environment, likely not getting the best of "care."
I wonder if anyone ever checked her over for other post-partum complications or infections.

When you order the info from the archives link mckha489 gave you...It would be interesting to know how honest they were, or if there is anything more than regular entries...

I wouldn't known where to start trying to access the records for the asylum, Would anyone be able to access them for me if possible?
Thanks
