I assume my Grandfather would have attended school whilst at Long Crendon. Is there a record of school registers ? I’ve browsed ansestory.com but can’t see such a thing.

Long Crendon  has a village history website and email address. Might be worth asking if any information exists in the village. It's managed by the parish council.
  clerk ( insert usual ) longcrendon-pc.gov.uk

 You never know.

Thanks Tazzie,

That is a good suggestion! I'll give it a try.

William and Eliza Jane Tugwood, High St, Long Crendon have 4 named Barnados boarders in 1921 including one born Essex.  Likely William death in 1931 and Eliza Jane in 1936.

Thanks Sc00p,

Where did you come across that info? From the 1921 census? My grandfather was born in Ireland and boarded from 1926- 1936. But the death of Eliza could be a coincidence or explain why her returned to a home that year!

Yes, the 1921 Census.

I also turned up a much later newspaper article that stated Author Leslie Thomas (Virgin Soldiers) had a younger brother called Roy that was Boarded out from Barnados to Long Crendon when they were orphaned during WW2. Might be worth investigating....

Edit.  The Autobiography of Thomas's early life https://archive.org/details/thistimenextweek0000thom_z9z6/mode/1up might give some clues as to who boarded Roy as the Newpaper article also mentions Leslie absconded from barnados to visit his brother.
