Long Crendon - Buckinghamshire (Lucette or Hobday)
« on: Friday 20 September 24 17:37 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Im looking for some advice/help if possible.

I am looking for a family member who was a Barnardos child "boarded out" in Long Crendon between the years of 1926 -1936. I am unable to access the census's from these dates due to them not being a 100 years yet.

Im trying to find a way to establish the family who fostered him. Would there be anyway that anone can think of to find this out?

I already pocess his kept information from Barnardos and it does not state the family name.

The only names I have to go on are Mr Lucette and a W.E Hobday. Which were both mentioned in notes as 'friend'. And two addresses, one Long Crendon.
The other two are for W.E Hobday in 1939 living at The Lawn, Roundham Rd, Paignton and Ethorpe Hotel, Gerrards Cross.

Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.

In terms of W. E. Hobday, a man called Oswald Sergeant Smith of The Lawn, Roundham Road, Paignton, Devonshire died on 22nd September 1944 and probate was granted to Wilfred Ernest Hobday, retired civil servant.

So Wilfred Ernest Hobday is listed as a friend of the family who fostered your family member?

Also, there are unfortunately no surviving censuses between 1926 and 1936. There is only the 1921 census and the 1939 register, both of which have been released.

Queenie  :)

EDIT: A newspaper article describes Hobday as the son-in-law of Oswald Smith, so that explains their connection.

You won’t ever see the 1931 Census  for England and Wales, it was destroyed in a fire in 1942. There was no census in 1941 because of the war. For the next available Census you will have to wait until 2052. Rather a long way off for many of us.😢

Thanks Queenie!

Sorry I dont think I have explained myself very clearly. I should of read back my inital post.

Wilfred Ernest Hobday (which i now know, thank you) is mentioned as a friend of my grandfather in his Barnardos notes. He wrote to him once he left Barnardos at the request of a Mr Lucette.

My grandfather was "borded out" in Long Crendon for 10 years, returned to Banardos for vocational training and left a few years later to work.  But I have no address for Long Crendon.

Its hard to tell from Barnardos notes if Mr Lucette was someone who worked there, or if Mr Hobday was a friend from Barnardos or someone he knew from when he was in Long Crendon.

Think I've cracked Mr Lucette

In 1939 Edward Henry Lucette is employed at a Dr Barnardos home in Essex

I suspected Lucette might be. That would make sense.

Hobday's DOB is 1889 and my grandfather DOB is 1923. Cant quite understand the connection. Hobday appears to have been a soilder and so not sure how they would of crossed paths to make a friendship.

The notes read "Mr Lucette has asked for a friend to write to lad" and then names Hobday and his address. Perhaps Hobday is Lucettes friend!?

It's possible Edward Lucette (b c1896)  & Wilfred Hobday (b c 1889) knew each other and were friends.

Edward's profession on his marriage in 1925 was Ceylon civil service
Wilfred was a civil servant and appears to have married in India

Their paths may have crossed there?

I suspect you’re right. I think that Lucette and Hobday and more likely the friendship. Perhaps writing to my grandfather to offer some advice or friendship since he had just left the care of Barnardos.

I think I was barking up the wrong tree there. Had hoped it might lead me to understand more about his time in Long Crendon.
