Photo date
« on: Friday 20 September 24 01:45 BST (UK) »
Hi
Is any one able to give me a rough date on the attached photo. I have tried and failed to date the dress and even the style of chair but haven't had much luck.
The sitter is a relative of mine but I am unsure of who without matching her to a rough date. I don't have the original photo so I can't check the back.
Thanks  :)

Nice photo. Just bumping up as it seems to have been missed.

Only a guess, but maybe 1890s - ??  That's the nearest I can find in my book on the subject.   :)

Are you able to post the back of the photo?  That could give some clues.

It's difficult to see the detail but my best guess is Edwardian - 1901 - 1910 ish

I go with Gadget, Edwardian. I would think she was dressed for an evening event, it looks as if her shoes are silver.

Also agree with Gadget & would suggest the first half of the decade.

It appears that her left hand is on top of her right hand?  If the photo wasn’t “reversed” (sorry, don’t know the correct terminology) could she have been left-handed?  I believe it is more common for the dominant hand to be on top of the other hand.  Do you know of any lefties in your family?

Great photo
I agree with early 1900s
Formal attire

I wonder what the shiny dress was made out of .

Were your relatives wealthy enough to afford silk or could she be modeling in one of the photographers outfits

How old do you think the lady in the photo is ?.

Thank you everyone  :)
My own thought was that it may have been early edwardian as I thought she may have been a sister of my great grandmother who was born in 1880. There are a few lefties on that side of the family so she could well have been left handed.
I don't think they were wealthy, my great great grandfather was a stitcher in the shoe trade so I am unsure whether that would have been well paid. The family had a few studio photos done over the years, I am not sure if that was the usual thing to do at that time or whether they saved up and had them done for special occasions. It's a shame I haven't got access to the original as it would be very interesting to see if anything was on the back.
