Birth and early family records Mary WALSH
« on: Wednesday 18 September 24 23:28 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am looking for information about birth and parentage of Mary Coupe nee Walsh.  Born approximately 1845-1849 Mayo Ireland.  Buried 25 January 1916 aged 67 at St James the Apostle , Wardle, near Rochdale, Lancashire.

Married Thomas Coupe in 1867 at St Bartholomew's, Whitworth, Lancaster.
Mary Walsh, 22, spinster, residence Whitworth, father John Walsh, Labourer.

Can't find her on the 1871 census but can see her husband, Thomas,  and child John Thomas Walsh age 6 listed.

Found on census and lots of other records after 1871.

Thank you

Howarth- Rochdale
Coupe- Rochdale
Walsh-Mayo,Ireland

1871 census for Mary, recorded as Walsh, but is married and should be Coupe.

Hi softly softly
Thank you for your reply .  Thank you for your suggestion that she was staying with family during census time, however I think this is not a match.

There are two families here Martin Walsh and Catherine with Mary Ann 13, Margaret 8 and Catherine 6.
Mary Walsh ( sister ) with Ann 6, Edward 4 and Thomas 2.
There is no mention of these children in subsequent census.
Many thanks aber

The names of the children may give a clue as to her mother.

John Thomas Walsh 1865 Illegitimate
Female Coupe no name in registry 1868 reg. Rochdale mother's maiden name Walsh -
James William Coupe 1869 possible death 27 December 1883 age 13
Robert Coupe 1872  mmn Welsh
Margaret Ann Coupe 1874  mmn Welsh  death 1876 age 2
Sophia  Coupe 1876  mmn Walsh   buried 15 March 1877 age 1
Ellis  Coupe 1878
Joseph Coupe 1880

Lancashire Parish Records online
GRO Index - all registered Rochdale various spelling of mother's maiden name.

Problem is we don't know the name of the first female 1868 usually named for the maternal grandmother. If 1861 is correct then she was possibly named Mary.

Many thanks for your reply and details that I was not aware of.  Mary was my great grandmother.  I have gathered quite a lot of information on her after her marriage but have been unable to get information of her before her marriage in 1867 at St Bartholomew, Whitworth, Lancashire.(/I have a copy of the marriage certificate).
Thank you for information about female child born 1868.  In 1911 Mary stated she had had 10 children born alive but only 5 were still alive.
I have managed to find 8 children.  John Thomas 1865, James Ivan ( sometimes called James William) 1870, Robert 1871, Margaret Ann 1874 -1874, Sophia 1875 - 1877, Ellis 1878, Joseph 1880, and my grandmother Sarah Alice 1883 ( born after her father died) .
The parish register (Freereg.org.uk) of St James the Apostle in Wardle lists information about births, marriages and deaths of the Coupe family.
I have been searching for years for information of Mary’s birth but have not yet found accurate information.  She is not consistent recording her age on census records.
I am an inexperienced researcher not familiar with how information is achieved.
Many thanks for your help.

Lancashire Parish Records online has the baptism for Wardle but not the burials.

GRO Index is free to join has gives mother's maiden name

www.RootsIreland.ie  has good information

Try following the 1861 census family their daughter Mary is the right age.
