John Quilliam of Glenmaye
« on: Wednesday 18 September 24 21:01 BST (UK) »
I'm looking to find out what became of John Quilliam of Glenmaye one of the two boys (both "about twelve years of age") who took part in the rescue of the Thurgar ladies at Port Erin in 1874 (150 years ago this year). The other boy identified initially as "Corrin" was one of my Mylchreests so I know about him. I have THE book given to him which has a page with a written entry thanking my relative. John Quilliam was given a bible with a similar message of thanks in it. I think John (Charles) Quilliam was baptised on 20th October 1861 at Patrick and was the son of Charles Quilliam and Margaret Corkill. He's on the 1871 census but no further censuses after that. Some of his family turn up in the USA he may have gone there. In 1874 he was a cook on a fishing boat according to the newspapers so he may have been at sea a great deal in later life.

Hello C,

My husband David is distantly related to John Charles Quilliam.

John Taubman 1707-1755 and Isabel Cubon 1710 -1749 (David's 7th great grandparents)
their son John Taubman and Margaret Moore
their daughter Catherine Taubman and John Cooil
their daughter Jane Cooil and John Corkill
their son John Corkill and Mary Collister
their daughter Margaret Corkill and Charles Quilliam
their son John Charles Quilliam b.1861

Even though I know next to nothing about John Charles and his family, I'm more than happy to help if I can.

All the best,
Margaret

Unfortunately I have had little success regarding finding John Charles Quilliam after 1871.  :(
I have looked at all censuses where his siblings and extended family appear both in IOM and USA, also marriage and death records plus newspapers to no avail.

In the 1881 IOM census (Fisherman at Kinsale Mackerel Fishing) was possibly John's brother, Thomas Quilliam age 15 born Patrick,  aboard the fishing boat "Lily" 172 also on the same census was a John Quilliam age 18 born Patrick on the fishing boat "Exquisite" 122  who could be John Charles - the census was taken  April 1881 and John was baptised in Oct 1861 so was approximately 19 years of age at the time.

Another possibility the 1891 IOM census has a John Quilliam enumerated as age 30 (looks more like age 32 on the image) born Peel Fishermen on "Banshee" 6

In 1901 Isle of Man census - Peel Fishing Fleet there were two John Quiliam's born in Peel.
John Quilliam 44 b. 1857 on "Hannah 7" Peel N0 21
John Quilliam 43  b.1858 on "Cruiser" No 78

I'm of the mind that our John Charles Quilliam may have died at sea but have no way of proving it!

Just to confuse things, some trees have John Charles Quilliam (with parents Charles Quilliam and Margaret Corkill) a house painter who married Emma J Harrison born Risley in 1920 West Derby Lancashire - she first married William Harrison in 1898. John and Emma had the following children: Samuel, Joseph, George, Alexander, Emma J and Ethel.

This is in fact John Kelly Quilliam born 10 May1858 Liverpool Lancashire and died 1948 Merseyside.   England age 90 years (He was a house painter according to the England censuses) Emma Jane was born 24 June 1881 and died 1956 in Liverpool Lancashire. I haven't been able to ascertain who John Kelly Quilliam's parents were.

I'm so sorry that I was unable to find him :(  ???

Margaret

Thanks Margaret. My searches also came up with the fishermen possibilities for 1881 and 1891. Some online trees do think that he might be the John Quilliam who died in Liverpool in 1948 but as you said this was actually John Kelly Quilliam. He may well have died at sea or emigrated somewhere that doesn't come up in online searches. Thanks for looking.

I noticed some confusion on Ancestry trees about the place names near Glenmaye on these Quilliam family census records. For future reference I think the Tregah cottages of 1871 were at Trelja and Ballakurkey of 1881 or Ballakerka of 1891 or the Ballakerky of the map below are now spelt as either Ballakerkey or Ballakirkey (seems to have also been called Ballakirkley in the past):-

I have a copy of "The Place-Names of the Isle of Man" by J.J.Kneen, published 1925, my copy republished 1970.

In it there is:

Ballakirkey - Quirk or McQuarkes Farm"
Noted in the Manorial Rolls of 1515 (Richard McQuarke), and 1703 (William Querke and Balla Carkey)

The transcription of the book can be found at:
