Any street directories for 1916 Dublin

Hi guys,

I wonder if you can help me please as I am struggling with irish records.

I need to find who lived at 8 Granby Place in Dublin in 1916. I have a copy of a letter to Joseph Clarke, brother of Thomas Clarke (leader of the Irish Republican Brotherhood) and it is signed by a John of 8 Granby Place dated 26th April 1916 if anyone can advise how to find the information.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Ann

I am not sure where you are based but if you can get into the NLI in Dublin City Centre they have the Thom's Official Directory of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland for the Year 1916 available to view in the Main Reading Room and in the Manuscripts Reading Room of the library. You need to be a member to access it but that is free and usually the card can be created without an appt. I know Thom's didn't contain a list of residents but it might have the name of the business at that address, which might get you further along in your search.

Or have you considered contacting the Military Archives to see if they have any record of someone who served in the 1916 Rising called John at that address. Might be a long shot but it is prob where I would start.

The Free Genealogy Advisory Service in the National Archives have been really good before when I have asked for advise on how to go further with research and they are another stop you could try. You just fill in the questionnaire and email it in to them. You might be lucky and they might have an interest in 1916 and go that little extra mile for you.

The Geoghegan family are at 8 & 9 in 1911 and a Patrick Geoghegan is listed in the voters list of 1915 at 8.

Wow, that is very interesting Sinann - and there is a John in that family. These references are much better than what I suggested. I shall be saving the links for future reference.
