Hello all, the painting has arrived home from being professionally cleaned, and I am thilled with the results, the filth has gone and the painting now glows. I took a photo of it this evening in artificial light, I am not sure you will be able to appreciate the difference, but I can tell you it has been transformed!
After languishing in an attic unframed for 100 years or so, it is finally seeing the light of day and is loved. All I now need to do is get it framed and hung on a wall here at home.

Enjoy and best wishes

I think you may find the following of interest. The section on Private schools in particular has much info on Wallace and the institution. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/9619/2/9619_6406-vol2.PDF
Happy Reading!

Both terms are still in use in Berwick. I always refer to this street as Marygate as it sounds more interesting than plain old High Street!

DOCKWREY (South Shields)
REDPATH (Northumberland, Oklahoma)
SOUTHERN, SUTHREN, SITHERN (North Northumberland)

Pete, thanks for your comment, yes, I am absolutely over the moon with the painting, it glows and changes with the light in the room every minute of every day, sometimes looking a little foreboding when the weather is gloomy. Though far away I get to 'visit' Berwick and the Tweed everyday! I can't stop looking at it.
