Marriages of Edward Neighbour - Cookham 1767 & Bisham 1773
« on: Monday 09 September 24 06:38 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I would like it if some-one could find the actual parish register entry for the marriage of Edward Neighbour & Anne Tredaway at Cookham dated 23 Aug 1767.  Quite surprisingly, they also baptize a daughter, Sarah, on the same day.

I am having trouble with this pair as I believe Edward was baptized in West Wycombe 28 Feb 1749 while Anne was baptized 13 Mar 1750 in Farnham Royal, making him 18 and her 17.  I am interested in seeing if there is anything about banns or license, parental consent, or parish of origin.

The only other child I can find for an Edward & Ann Neighbour is James baptized 30 Jun 1771 in St Luke Finsbury London.  It is this James that I have as a 3G grandfather.

There is a subsequent marriage of Edward Neighbour bachelor of West Wycombe to Martha Pointer of Bisham 19 Aug 1773.  They have five known children all born in West Wycombe; Elizabeth 1774, William 1776, John 1778, Thomas 1781, James 1783.

So, am I looking at two men named Edward Neighbour; did Anne die and Edward re-marry; or was the marriage some-how annulled because of their age and lack of parental consent?

The reason I ask is that I am getting DNA hits of both mothers which suggests two marriages of the same man but I need to confirm it if possible.

Many thanks, Colin

According to the transcriptions both marriages were by licence. The marriage to Anne gives Edward's parish as Taplow and the marriage to Martha as West Wycombe. Edward noted as Bachelor  for both marriages.

There is a burial in Cookham 26 July 1768 for an Ann Neighbour. No other details given.

A transcript of the MLB (Archdeaconry of Berkshire) has the following information about the marriage to Martha:

Edward Neighbour 23 Yeoman of West Wycombe, bachelor & Martha Pointer spinster age 23 of Bisham.  One of the bondmen was Thomas Nelson, wheelwright of Bisham.

Generally the bond would probably give the age as 23 and upwards.  The parishes given are their residence at the time of marriage, not where they were born.

I can't find any further information on the licence for the other marriage.  Taplow is in Buckingamshire so it may have been issued under a different jurisdiction.

Thank you both for the information.

I think I am going to have to revisit this whole line as the only thing I am certain of is the baptism of James Neighbour in Finsbury in 1771 to Edward & Ann.

As far as I can see there are only two marriages anywhere in England of Edward Neighbour with wife Ann in the forty years prior to 1771;  Ann Grey at Fingest Bucks in 1737 and Ann Tredaway at Cookham Berks in 1767.

I am happy to be proven wrong.
