Death Look Up
« on: Sunday 08 September 24 09:41 BST (UK) »
Hello
Can anyone be so kind as to look up a death for Mary Jane Pickles born circa 1880 in England and married to James Ogilvie Dickson.  James was born in 1874 in Lanarkshire, Scotland.  Occupation was a farmer.   I'm unable to find a sailing for him after 1891 but have found him on census records in Canada

So far, I've been unable to find a marriage for them in Canada but they had 3 daughters, that I've found:
Florence Val Dickson born circa 1911
Dorothy Alexandra born 28 Feb 1915
Jean Dickson born 25 July 1918

I also have a Manifest for James in 1929 accompanied by his sister in law, Mrs P. B. Shaw
1930 & 1932 from Victoria, BC to Eastport, Idaho.  On 1932 one, his wife is named as Maude Crowe.  It seems he travelled back & Forth.  Maybe he remarried. All the more confusing

Someone has Mary dying on 10 February 1930 in Victoria but I haven't found a death for her or a gravestone

Hoping someone can solve the mystery

You're in luck. The Victoria Daily Times is available online for free. Here is a link to the 1931-05-20 issue. I couldn't find a reference to Mary Jane Dickson or even a specific Arts and Culture section, but I didn't read the entire paper.

I hope you can find what you're looking for in this issue. If you go to the webpage, you can download it in PDF form using the menu on the righthand side.

Oops! It looks like you changed your original request.  I’ll dig up the obituary for Mary.

Yes, I saw that one but it's registered under married name so unsure if it's Actually her.   Would it not be recorded under her maiden name??

If I’m correctly understanding your question, no, in North America deaths are typically recorded using the woman’s married name.  [I believe Scottish deaths were/are generally recorded with maiden names?]  Apologies if my reply is incorrect.

Lisa beat me to it. Just what I was going to say. Death's usually recorded under married name.

Possibly Mary Jane?

and James (buried in the same section as Mary Jane)

I’ve not reread the posts; perhaps this was already mentioned?  (Hubby chatting; difficult to concentrate)  ;D

Added:  are deaths in Scotland still recorded with the woman’s maiden name?  Just curious.

On 1932 one, his wife is named as Maude Crowe.

I'm not sure that I can see the entry you are talking about. I can see an entry for James O DICKSON accompanied by "bro Henry and nephew George" on 29 Sept 1932.  :-\
