There was a new governor of Trinidad & Tobago appointed in 1929
Sir Alfred Claud HOLLIS
So - perhaps there was a change over of other staff, and your man applied.

I think that may be Roderick's birthdate but agree it is misleading

You have Frances Maria's death as 1911 , however I have found Edward John Kettle Roberts and Frances  on the Electoral Register in Poplar in 1918, 1919 and 1920.

There appears to have been a son , Edward W Kettle Roberts b 1904 , who died in 1918    ( Whitechapel 1c 211 ). His death certificate says he was the son of Edward John Kettle Roberts , an engineer's fitter , of 20 Oban Street Poplar, the address for the family in 1919 and 1920.

In  1922 F Roberts b 1874 and F L Roberts  sailed for Trinidad and Tobago on the ship Asian . Their intended permanent residence was Trinidad and their last address in England was 20 Oban Street Poplar.

I haven't found any mention of Edward John Kettle Roberts as a policeman. On the 1929 passenger list he is an engineer.

The above is all I could find at present and you may be aware of some of it already. At the risk of further speculation there was a growing oil industry in Trinidad at that time , perhaps that's why he went.

Wonder why Edward adopted his wife's maiden name as his own surname & used his birth surname as an additional christian name?
