John Dare apprenticeship
« on: Wednesday 04 September 24 09:23 BST (UK) »
I have a John Dare born 1792 and died 1861, Eastworth, Chertsey, Surrey. The 1841 census finds him living in Clerkenwell and described as a Brazier. The 1851 census he is a Victualler at The Bald Faced Stag Inn, Putney Vale.
I am certain I have seen an apprenticeship record for him as a brazier, and like a fool didn’t make a note of it and can no longer find it. Can anyone help please?

In the 1839 Pigot's Directory of London, there is a John Dare, watch maker, listed at 34 Rosaman Street, Clerkenwell.

There is an apprenticeship record for a John Dare in 1804 City of London with master William Stayner, Tallow Chandler but no evidence that he is your John Dare

Doesn't help with an apprenticeship but it may be of interest that the license for the Bald Faced Stag was transferred from John DARE to William MAGRUP on 22 May 1852.

In the 1851 census John DARE says he was born Windlesham, Surrey. Is this his baptism - 19 Oct 1791, son of Richard and Sally DARE at St John the Baptist Windlesham?

I have a John Dare born 1792 and died 1861, Eastworth, Chertsey, Surrey.

"John Dare, son of Richard Dare late of Freemantle in the parish of Windlesham in the county of Surrey Nurseryman deceased doth put himself apprentice to Thomas Long Sheen Citizen.  Armourer and Brazier of London to learn his art ..."

Thank you as always for your responses.
Moving on, I think John Dare married Rebecca Robinson in 1815, St Brides Fleet Street, London. They I think had a son John Robinson Dare circa 1817, Long Sutton Hampshire. Can anyone find records which place John and Rebecca Dare in Hampshire at his time. By 1819 they seem to be back in London when he was with the Armourers and Braziers.
The 1841 census living in William Street,Clerkenwell as a Brazier, the 1851 census as a victualler at The Bare Faced Stag, Putney Vale, the 1861 census just prior to his death aged 68 and listed as a “propietor of land and houses”. Where would I look for records of land and house ownership, or is this just an exaggeration of his status?

Can't necessarily see anything placing the DARE's in Long Sutton except the baptism of John Robinson DARE on 3 June 1816, parents John (manufacturer) and Rebecca.

When John Robinson DARE dies in 1864 at Chertsey, his mother Rebecca (widow) is mentioned on his probate as an executor.
