Help please with marriage in Christ Church 1763
« on: Monday 02 September 24 18:41 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Please has anyone got access to the Parish Registers for Christ Church?

I'm interested to see the Marriage Certificate for George Hunt and Alice Harsman - I believe that they were married there in about January 1763, so would be very grateful for any help.

Thanks,

Kit

There were several parishes named Christ Church in London, even in 1763. Presumably this is Christ Church Newgate Street, judging by the marriage allegation on Ancestry?

But unfortunately there are no surviving registers for Christ Church Newgate Street at that date, as they were destroyed by enemy action in 1940. There are a few transcripts of extracts for some years, held at The London Archives, but they are not online.

Thanks very much to both of you for your replies.

That explains why I cannot find the Marriage Certificate! What a terrible shame, but at least I have got the Marriage Bond.

Thanks very much - I really appreciate your help and kindness,

Kit

There would not have been a marriage 'certificate' in 1763 anyway.
Those did not start until 1837 with Civil Registration.
All that would have appeared in the entry for their marriage in the parish register would probably have been just their names, and possibly their parishes.
You are lucky it was by licence, and you have a few extra details from that.
Lane, Burgess: Cheshire. Finney, Rogers, Gilman:Derbys
Cochran, Nicol, Paton, Bruce:Scotland. Bertolle:London
Bainbridge, Christman, Jeffs: Staffs

Thanks for that
Yes, I know that prior to 1837, there was not a huge amount of information, but I was hoping to see the names of the Witnesses!
But as you say, at least I have got the information from the Bond.

Thanks again,
Kit
