Metropolitan & Eagle Breweries in Fulham
« on: Monday 26 August 24 18:09 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

My ancestor David Yeldham was a Brewer operating in Fulham in the 1860s and 1870s. I found a reference to the “Metropolitan Brewery” that he built on Dawes Road in a book called “Fulham Old and New”; it was later known as the Eagle Brewery. The book was published in 1900 so the building still existed then.

I’d be keen to know if anyone else has seen references to these Breweries? Ideally the location on Dawes Road. I’ve looked at some old maps of Dawes Road, but no luck there.

Many thanks,

Ryan.

Sadly David Yeldham appears to have been declared bankrupt in 1862, several newspaper articles re him. He appears in 1871 in Toxteth Park, West Deby with wife and family.

This is the first newspaper reference I see to the Metropolitan Brewery. Is a location in Fulham Fields consistent with Dawes Road?

Thanks Alan. This is David’s son, Joseph Raven Yeldham.

Dawes Road is in an area formerly known as Fulham Fields. Present day, “St Andrews Fulham Fields” church is about 5-10 minutes walk from Dawes Road.

I’ve been looking at Dawes Road on various maps, but not found any sign of a brewery yet. There are a couple of 1888 newspaper references to Eagle Brewery, Dawes Road. The content isn’t particularly informative, although one of them indicates that the manager at the time was David Green.
