SANDERS from Reigate, Burstow and Leigh, Surrey
« on: Monday 26 August 24 14:51 BST (UK) »
I’m currently researching the SANDERS family from the Reigate area and due to a lack of information on-line, wonder if anyone knows anything about them or has access to records that would help me. Apart from BMD entries in parish entries, I just cannot locate any information about the Sanders family.
I'm particularly keen to learn more about where they lived in terms of locality and size.
Generation 1: John Sanders (d1632) and his wife.                                                                                            1599 and 1612 John was of Odworth, Yeoman.
Generation 2: John Sanders (1612-1644) and his wife Bridget Bancke.                                                    Have no information.
Generation 3: Richard Sanders (1638-1716) and his wife Mary Peeler.                                               Lived in Burstow, but have no specific information.
Generation 4: Richard Sanders (1673-1706) and his wife Elizabeth Lambert.                                        Freeholder and Copyholder in Burstow. Described as a Yeoman.
Generation 5: John Sanders (1705-1736) and his wife Mary Hill.                                                                       1706 described as a Yeoman. 1736 referred to as Captain John Sanders.                                                    Also recorded as a ‘gentleman’ of Woodhatch.
Generation 6: Johnson Sanders (1730-1778) and his wife Martha Charlwood.                                          Recorded as being ‘of Lodge’.  This, I believe, was a manor house but did he occupy it himself? 1775 Freeholder with property in Charlwood .
Generation 7: Thomas Sanders (1763-1840) and his wife Mary Ware.                                              Described as ‘of Court’ but did he occupy what, I believe, was a manor house itself? How large was it and where?
Generation 8: James Anders (1783-1837) and his wife Mary Dungate.                                               1816 Bailiff at Court Lodge. Does this refer to a smaller residence and not the manor house itself?
Generation 9: Richard Sanders (1817-1892) and his wife Mary Ann Knight.                                         1847 Stable House, Dorking. 1871 Collikmoor Farm. 1881 Breakspear Farm, Capel.
Generation 10: Thomas Sanders (1844-?) and his wife Martha Rose.                                                          1871 Upper Meridan, Dorking.

Any information will be really appreciated.

In the British Universal Directory, 1793-8, a Mrs. Sanders is listed at Dorking as a meal dealer.

In Pigot's Directory, 1839, a John Sanders was a baker at Dorking.

Thank you for your replies, it was appreciated. The SANDER / SANDERS were a family of status, reflected in the fact that the earlier generations were Yeoman and lived in manor houses (or similarly large) in or around Reigate with names such as 'Court', 'Lodge', 'Stable Farm', 'Collikmoor Farm' etc
Due to their place in Surrey society, I wonder if anyone has already researched them? Or knows of any publications which may help me learn more about their residences.
The internet is sadly devoid of information.
Thank you.

Richard Sanders was a farmer at Coldharbour, Surrey, on the 1871 census, born at "Horley", Surrey.

In the P.O. Directory of the Six Home Counties, 1855, a James Sanders, farmer, is listed at Leigh.

Not what you want, I expect, considering the high status of the Sanders, but it may help somewhere.

All replies are much appreciated as they help to build up a picture of the family.
I've got in touch with the Surrey library service to find out if they have any books that may help me find out more about Odworth, the manor of Court, the Manor of Lodge etc
There has to be some information out there somewhere!
