Marriage Licence - John Thorpe and Anne Taylor - 1788
« on: Monday 26 August 24 08:41 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Does anyone have access to Nottinghamshire Marriage Licences please?

I think that my 4x Great Grandfather, John Thorpe, married Ann Taylor by Licence on 3rd June 1788. I've seen the register entry on Ancestry, but I'd be very interested to see what additional information the Licence contains about John and Ann, so any assistance anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated.

Thanking you in anticipation.

Offline Alexander.

The marriage licence itself very rarely survives.

You may be able to find the marriage bond or allegation in some cases, but even this does not always survive.

For Nottingham, you would usually find these in the Archdeaconry Court of Nottingham records.

Search index at:
https://mss-cat.nottingham.ac.uk/Calmview/advanced.aspx?src=CalmView.Persons

Most of the marriage bonds from Nottinghamshire were indexed in Abstracts of Nottinghamshire Marriage Licences. You can search/browse this book on Ancestry.co.uk:
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/collections/28561/

Unfortunately a quick look for John Thorpe and Ann Taylor did not bring up any results, so this may be a case where no records of the licence has survived.

Many thanks for your very helpful reply Alexander.

I wasn't aware that the abstracts of Nottinghamshire Marriage licences were available on Ancestry, and whilst it doesn't help me with this search I have other ancestors from the Nottingham area, so may well find it useful in the future.

Thanks again  :)
