Ancestry.co.uk - Links Roots Magic - Family Search
« on: Sunday 25 August 24 13:07 BST (UK) »
I link my Ancestry Tree to Roots Magic (RM), which works well for me. However, it also gives me the opportunity to link the tree to Family Search LDS.

I am not sure if this is a good idea, based on security, others alternating my tree via family search etc.

Has anyone any thoughts on this?

Chris

I used Legacy for my tree and that's linked to Family Search too.  Sometimes I get a hint about an ancestor.

Yes, don’t.

My experience of Family Search trees is that they are considerably worst than those on Ancestry.

If you want a tree on familysearch.org then I suggest you create a separate one there.  I did that and put the wrong Father down as a trial to see if any hints showed, said father has found his way incorrectly onto many other trees which people have copied to their Ancestry trees.

I've said this before, but I'll repeat it:

I was doing some parish register research at the local LDS facility some years ago, and one of the LDS members was helping someone to upload their family tree to the LDS site.  At one stage the tree owner passed the comment "I'm not very sure that I've got the correct wife for this marriage".  The response was "it doesn't matter".  ::) ::)
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

So, you're part of the problem, not part of the solution.

Perhaps I should have added - I don't have my trees on-line anywhere.  :-X

I expect the reason they thought it didn’t matter, because the whole point was to research ancestors so that they could be posthumously baptised into the Mormon faith. An idea that would be abhorrent to many of our ancestors who were staunch believers in their own religion.

I only use Family Search to look for Parish  Records, but out of curiosity I did do one tree search and found my father with completely fictitious parents. At least on Ancestry most people have managed to give him the correct parents.
