Nathaniel CRAWFORD, Castlepollard, 1919
« on: Saturday 24 August 24 22:47 BST (UK) »
NATHANIEL CRAWFORD died on 28 Feb 1919 after serving with the Royal Army Service Corps in WW1.
Aged 35, he was the son of Richard and Jane Crawford. At the time of his death the Crawford family were living at Nonsuch, near Castlepollard. The family were Church of Ireland.
The family were closely associated with the Castlepollard area. In 1911 they were at Pakenham Hall/Tullynally. In 1913 (27/4/1913) Nathaniel's sister Mary Anne died at Portjack; in 1919 (8/7/1919)his mother Jane died at Nonsuch. Another sister, Harriet, died in Granard Workhouse on 5/5/1920.
Nathaniel's death was directly attributable to his war service but, like many others, he was never commemorated as a war casualty. In order to have his grave designated as a War Grave it is necessary to have proof of burial.
Does anyone know where Nathaniel Crawford - or any memory of the family - was buried?
I would be very grateful for any help.

Looks like his death was registered in Granard, County Longford.
What information does his death certificate give about his burial?

Death registration only gives details of his death - no indication where he was buried. The townland of Nonsuch where the family were living - and where he died, is right on the western side of Castlepollard.

Hello trevalyn,

Firstly may I commend you on your quest, it is a very worthy cause.

I noticed that Nathaniel's parents' marriage, his baptism, his and his mother's deaths were all registered in Coole. I would be inclined to start a search there.

I know that there is a Church of Ireland church in Coole, but I don't think that it is still operating as a church. There is a cemetery beside it.

I would be happy to wander around the cemetery (if I'm allowed) the next time I am in that area (which probably won't be for a month or two), and see if there are any Crawford grave markers. I doubt there is, but sometimes you can be surprised.

If the church in Coole is closed it might be worth contacting the Church of Ireland head office to see if they have any Coole records. Contacting the Church of Ireland in Castlepollard is another option (a lovely church, worth a visit). A quick internet search will give you contact details for both the above.

Regards,

Feichin

P.S. Interesting witnesses on Nathaniel's parents marriage record.

Hello trevalyn,

I visited Saint Nicholas Church of Ireland Cemetery in Coole today.

I could find no Crawford grave markers there, this didn't surprise me. That said, quite a number of the headstones are so weather beaten that any inscription has long since vanished. Some of the others were I suspect just markers and never had an inscription.

The cemetery itself is in very good condition and has recent burials. Perhaps a local undertaker would be able to provide you with the contact details of whoever is maintaining it. They could have some further information.

Regards,

Feichin

P.S. I took a handful of photos of the cemetery if they are of any interest to you.

If the family were Church of Ireland (as mentioned in original post here) and Nathaniel was buried in a COI graveyard then that church might have a burial register which would give his name and date of interment (possibly also an age and/or plot number).

Have you looked in local newspapers for a death notice or In Memorium notice for not just Nathaniel but the rest of the family?
