Where there soldiers from America at Fulwood Barracks in 1896 ?
« on: Saturday 24 August 24 07:23 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have any news about soldiers from the USA who may have been at Fulwood Barracks in late 1895 to 1896.
Is this something back then that could have taken place ?

There was the Venezuelan crisis of 1895 involving UK and USA, but this seems to have been resolved peaceably.

What is your source for presuming there were US troops in Fulwood during this time?

Possibly a US-born soldier in the British Army? There are several in the 1901 census.

Its because of a DNA brickwall i have, my family mostley come from the uk, ie England etc yet i have on one side of my grandfathers side a lot of matches and in this they go back a very long time in the USA, now the mother of my grandfather and her life is well documented etc and she never left the UK, there is Fulwood barracks in preston where she lived in the 1880s until about 1900, her name is recorded as being a family member to her brother in law in about 1895/96 when he was in barracks at fleetwood, so both places are of some interest at the moment, the only thing i can think of is that who ever was the bio father of my grandfather was from the USA and met her in Lancashire/Preston or fleetwood etc.

Could the man have been a seaman? Preston docks were revamped in the 1890s and operated until 1981.

The 1901 census for Preston lists 130 residents born in America.

What surname is your American DNA connection?

the Surname of the family from the USA was Kirk, there is a second family that may have connected to this one depending on who was male or female etc and that may have been Maguire.
One of them or both together had a child , a male that met my relation in about the January of 1896 in order for my grandfather to be born at the end of the October of 1896.
