Gadget, Cottage Homes were a spin off from the workhouses. They were meant to get children off the streets and away from the bad influences of some people in the workhouse. The idea was to give the children some education and train them for future employment. As with the workhouses, some cottages homes were better than others.

Thank you for the info, you are right. Their mother died in the workhouse in 1871 and I can't find them afterwards in any census records, marriage/death records. So I was wondering if that's where they might have gone?

I suggest you take a look at Peter Higgins website, you will find lots of information about Cottage Homes there, it’s the go to site for Workhouses and children’s homes.

Thank you for the info, Jebber. you are right, I have been on this website in the past but I never even considered the "cottages" until I watched an episode of "Who do you think you are" (Paddy McGuiness) and it made me think about them and what could have happened to them.

I live in the wider Tyneside area but haven't heard of any 'Cottage Homes' there but these links  might be relevant:

Also

https://www.workhouses.org.uk/Tynemouth/  and scroll down to 'Scattered Homes'

(add - the 'Scattered Homes' seem likely if your relatives were young girls)

From what I can see they started calling them "scattered homes" after 1893, so this would have been earlier. I was thinking of asking the archive in that area if they have any records.

There's an old post on here which lists the available records. It looks as if the years that you want seem to be missing.

My Great Granny was a resident of Tynemouth workhouse for most of her childhood, until she was sent to the scattered home at Ponteland, her records of admittance and of her leaving were at the Discovery centre in Tynemouth, not an awful lot of detail, there are also minute books for Tynemouth workhouse, held in the family history section of North Shields library, I found entries for a member of my family mentioned in those, (boarding out minutes ) I think they were called

perhaps make a email enquiry to the archives in Newcastle to see when your ancestors were admitted
