Cottage Homes near Norh Shields/Tynemouth area
« on: Saturday 24 August 24 00:01 BST (UK) »
I was wondering if there are any records available for who was staying in the cottage homes in the North Shields/Tynemouth area in the 1860-1870's? or if anyone had any information on what their life would have been like? I believe two of my 4x great grand uncles/aunts, might have stayed in them. Any help is appreciated,

I suggest you take a look at Peter Higgins website, you will find lots of information about Cottage Homes there, it’s the go to site for Workhouses and children’s homes.

I live in the wider Tyneside area but haven't heard of any 'Cottage Homes' there but these links  might be relevant:

Also

https://www.workhouses.org.uk/Tynemouth/  and scroll down to 'Scattered Homes'

(add - the 'Scattered Homes' seem likely if your relatives were young girls)

Gadget, Cottage Homes were a spin off from the workhouses. They were meant to get children off the streets and away from the bad influences of some people in the workhouse. The idea was to give the children some education and train them for future employment. As with the workhouses, some cottages homes were better than others.

Yes, I know. I don't think I explained myself very well    I meant that I'd not heard the term used up here - they seem to have been called 'Scattered Homes'

Loctated at
 Earsdon, Monkseaton,
Park Crescent and Queen Alexandra Road,  North Shields
These are mentioned in the Scattered Homes section that I referred to.

Sorry, I misunderstood, I was rather surprised that you appeared not to have hear of them. I know they went under different names. There was rather a scandal about the Cottage Homes attached to our workhouse, so they weren't always particularly nice or safe places for the children.

My maternal grandfather was in a workhouse that had no separate housing  for the children. He is shown, aged 3,  on the 1871 census in the main buildings but then was apprenticed to a local butcher by 1881.

He didn't tell his children.  I discovered it later.
