Hi Scot's G and a very warm welcome to RootsChat.

Could you please give us more information on the Fairbairn family. It would be most helpful if you could tell us the time frame you are looking for and any names/dates you may have.

Hi Dorrie
Thanks for answering my subject. The Fairbairn`s are from my Mother`s side of family and believe originated from that side of the country, only to eventually end up in the Glasgow area.  My Grandfather was called David Fairbairn, his Father Robert I think and his Father David again, with possibly another Robert after him. Dates thinking about David GF, 1885, Robert 1863, David 1837 and Robert around early 1800`s. I have a marriage Cert from 1882 of Robert`s marriage to Margaret Fraser in the parish of Anstruther and there residence was Barry. I think the may have been farm servants.

If it is any help, 1921 census for Cupar has only one Fairbairn; a Catherina, age 32;

Added

There was a William M H Fairbairn age 69, in Ceres, 3 mls from Cupar in 1921

I think this may be William Menzies Fairbairn. He had a son under the same name who died in Cupar, 1959, age 72.

Just confining any search to the Cupar district - www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk are showing the following BMD''s from 1855 to date for the surname Fairbairn which may help if you are unsure of christian names etc

32 births
31 marriages
22 deaths

So not a common surname given the time span

The source of all things Fairbairn is Lorna Henderson's one name study which can be found at fairbairn.lornahen.com.

The 1881 census has Robert Fairbairn, age 18, in Barry, Angus.

His marriage to Margaret Fraser in 1882 was registered in Inchture, Perthshire.

The 1871 census for Ceres, Fife, has David Fairbairn, 36, Thomas, 10, Robert, 8, Agnes W, 5, Ann M; 4, & David, 2.

David Sr married Agnes Robertson, in Anstruther Easter, in 1861

Without looking up the census record, I think David was born 01/02/1835 in Oldhamstocks, a small village in East Lothian to Robert Fairbairn & Agnes Wood.

David passed, 1912, age 77, Stenton, East Lothian, mmn Wood.

1911 has David with daughters Agnes & Isabella in Stenton
