The burial index books for Holy Cross also include a column which records if the deceased is in a purchased plot.  If they are, there may be a memorial grave stone.
I can't remember if these books also record the exact section - I think they do but I am not completely certain.  But the burial entry on microfilm definitely will.

If the site is unmarked I think if you ask the burial office they will mark this temporarily on request.
They may do this for free.  It is worth asking.

If you find that you can't make it next week, Sandra.  I will look this up for Malshie when I can next go to the local studies.

Also just to mention for possible future research in the area - Church Bank Cemetery burial index books also record if a deceased person's grave was purchased.  I only noticed this recently.

Many thanks - I'll let you know if I can't get there, but it should be OK.

I have a feeling that the section numbers aren't recorded in the Holy Cross indexes. I have a list of plot numbers for my own family's burials taken from the indexes, which I now need to look up in the register, and I haven't written down any section numbers - presumably because they weren't given, unless I missed them, of course!

I know for  Preston Cemetery only the plot number (but not the sections) were not recorded up until around the mid 1940s.  I can't remember if it is the same for Holy Cross.

You may be right about Holy Cross but at least the sections will be recorded on the burial entries on microfilm.

If you can't go for whatever reason, I will be the back up. ;)

Hello Margaret

The grave in question, for Charles and John, is number 44, in section 27, Roman Catholic.

The burial register entries are as follows:

Charles O'Neil (spelled with one L here)
Age 67 years.
Died at Simpson's Hotel, Wallsend.
Buried on 25 February 1952.
Burial register entry number: 6223.

John O'Neill
Age 74.
Died at 30 Bede Crescent, Wallsend.
Buried on 12 May 1954.
Burial register entry number: 6965.

I didn't see any indication of a purchased plot.

With best wishes.

Also... a link to Simpson's Hotel. I'd heard of it but didn't know where it was.

Presumably this was Charles's place of death...

That's great that you have obtained the burial info for Margaret.  It was good to meet you Sandra today and chat at the local studies.  Hopefully, might see you again there soon. :)

By the way, Margaret although not connected with this thread I believe you are also interested in a burial for a Catherine O'Neill at Church Bank Cemetery. This is the burial entry:

Church Bank
Entry 20132
Catherine (This name is crossed over and replaced with 'Charlotte') O'Neill
Widow of Charles
Age 72
Garlands, Carlisle
Burial 10 March 1923
Section I Plot 11
Roman Catholic
Ceremony by George Wheatley

It seems from the photo request she is buried in an unmarked grave but that the grave was purchased in 1975.

I have checked the entries and it appears that in 1975 this person was buried in the same plot as Catherine/Charlotte:

Mary Ann McDonald
Age 86
Burial April 1975
(Ink smudge over the specific date but looking at others entries the date appears sometime before the next entry on 17th April 1975)
Age 76
Section I Plot 11
