George Snowball -1739 Baptism, Allendale
« on: Sunday 18 August 24 18:38 BST (UK) »
Hi all
A long time back, I made a note of a certain George Snowball, who was baptised on 18 November 1739 at St. Cuthbert, Allendale. His abode given as Fross House or Frost Hole.

The source, I recorded at the time, was the IGI Ovingham(?). However, I'm having doubts and I can now find neither this site for St. Cuthberts nor the record.

I would really appreciate it if anyone is able to supply where I might have got this information from and indeed if I had indeed recorded it accurately.
Furthermore, was his Spouse given as Mary Robson baptised 3 March 1734 Chester le Street?
Any help will be most gratefully received.

Thanks Trish.

It's mostly about a process of elimination now, as I've tracked my 4x great grandfather, George back to his baptism at St. Mary and St. Cuthbert,.Chester Le Street, Co. Durham, on 22nd March 1761.  This parish record shows his father as 'Geo. Snowball, of Birtley, Husbandman and Mary, his wife'.
George Jnr. lived at Harlow Hill and was buried in Ovingham, so they all seem fairly localised.

I'm now trying to find George of Birtley and Mary. There are not that many, except for George and Mary Robson who married inn Long Newton, Co. Durham 30th Nov 1758 but it seems a long shot, given the distance from all the action. Allendale seemed a bit closer but, as you've discovered, he's not my man.

Yes but so far, the only George Snowball and Mary in Northumberland or Co. Durham in the probable years of marriage.
I've just ordered the parish record from Durham Records of the Long Newton marriage, to see if there any clues on this!
Thanks for your input.

Thanks Trish
The parish record arrived this morning but it hasn't helped! :(
It also appears that the church had not quite got to grips with the new marriage laws, so although they were recording banns correctly they had not used the correct formula for the marriage itself and had written this in the margin later!
Both George Snowball and Mary Robso's banns are recorded as 'both of this parish'. So, is this the couple who move to Birtley, a distance of 30 + miles and if so, why a marriage so far from their roots?
However, they do seem to be the only likely contenders as George Jnr's parents, with few other leads to a Northumberland or Durham marriage of a George Snowball and Mary around 1750-60.
