I see it as Traveller (Oil & Grocery) - with the slashes // functioning as parentheses ().

Thank you, sounds a strange combination. He later refers to himself as a jeweller

He later refers to himself as a jeweller

Where have you found him as a jeweller?

As Trish has observed, in 1861 his occupation was ‘traveller & collector in various goods’, and it seems that he died before the 1871 census was taken.

Hi JenB , thanks for taking the time to help and show an interest
I didn't want to over complicate the original request but from various sources (below) I have the following information:
In 1834, at daughter Harriot's baptism, Father, Victor, is a shoemaker (his father and brother are variously cordwainers/shoemakers - their description)
In 1840 the record of his membership to The Hotel and Tavern Keepers Provident Institution. Mady, V. places him at "Evan's Grand Hotel Covent Garden" as a waiter)
In 1841 census he is still a waiter
In 1843, on son's birth certificate Henry Charles he is still a waiter
In 1861 census he is jeweller and collector (what ever that means)
He died in 1871 prior to the census but his death certificate states: jeweller(oil & colour made) - I think that is my misreading of Oil and Colour man (a dealer in the victualling trade, as i discovered) . It is further complicated as we changed the spelling of our name from Madit (in about 1837) to Mady. I have all this on the WAYE family tree (A***y) and really happy to accept any feedback if you dicovered anything additional or different, I am still very much a novice at this
thx again Paul

This isn't correct, as Trish and I have already pointed out in 1861 his occupation is 'traveller and collector in various goods' (unless I have the wrong person - I assume he's Victor Mady with daughter Rosalie at 28 Tavistock Place?)

Oil and Colour man (a dealer in the victualling trade, as i discovered)

An oil and colour man sold oil for lamps, paints and also sometimes household hardware.
