Confused about this 1861 census Cumberland place name
« on: Thursday 15 August 24 20:22 BST (UK) »
Hi,

This place name is in the 1861 census.  We know he lived around Irthington, but can't find his 1791 baptism yet..mostly because it's not clear where he is from.
Does this place name ring any bells with anyone?

thanks^

Looks like Cumberland St Mary?

I read it as Horns, but that doesn't help unless it is an abbreviated form of Hornsby perhaps?

And no one can help either because you have not given a name.

Oh thank you for offering that, but I am fortunately able to search myself in records and registers…I’m just not sure what this specific place name might be and so it would help narrow my search down

Bit of a long shot – in ~1871 there are newspaper reports of the establishment, in Carlisle, of St Mary’s Home for Penitent Women. (St Mary’s is a Carlisle parish I believe).  Perhaps your dates will rule this out?

And clearly this would be an odd place of birth to declare in a census.
