Margaret Canning, 1923, Holytown, Lanarkshire
« on: Monday 12 August 24 20:04 BST (UK) »
In 1921, Matthew Johnston is living with his wife Mary nee McLaughlin in Johnston Hall Lodge, Holytown, Lanarkshire.

In 1923, Matthew emigrates to Hamilton, Ontario by himself followed by wife Mary and children. When Matthew emigrates Aug 31, he says his wife Mary is living at Johnston Hall Lodge, Holytown.

When son Matthew emigrates, Nov 17, 1923, he says that his aunt Margaret Cunming (?Spelling) is living 62 Holytown Road, Holytown, Scotland. But I can't find Margaret in 1921 census, I don't know her husband's first name, I don't have her marriage,  I don't when she died, but she was born Margaret Johnston, Sept 19, 1867 in Ireland. I am assuming this is Matthew's sister, not his wife's sister.

Can anyone find Margaret? Thank you.

There was a William Cunning living at 62 Holytown Road on the 1920 & 1925 valuation rolls.

I found a William Cumming at Moss Vue, Holytown in 1921, age 40, born Paisley, wife Bella so not Margaret's husband. I thought maybe son but I didn't get anywhere with that idea. Can you tell me more about William Cunning who must be the correct person? Age, occupation, anything?

There is a William Shannon Cunning's death registered in Holytown in 1956, aged 82.
There is a Margaret Sloan Cunning's death registered in Holytown in 1963, aged 86.

GR2, you have solved the mystery. It was NOT Maggie Johnston who married William Cunning in 1896, it was Maggie McLaughlin, sister of Mary McLaughlin, who married Matthew Johnston.
Thanks so much for your help.
Matthew and Mary were on the 1931 census in Hamilton, Wentworth Co., Ontario and I don't find them after that, even their deaths. I did find their grandson's death and obit in 2020, Clyde Mark Johnston, son of Marcus who died Oct 25, 1982 but I didn't find his obit or Clyde's mother Reta May nee Latimer who died Mar 20, 1985.
