I've wiped out a whole line of my Ancestry tree.
« on: Sunday 11 August 24 13:28 BST (UK) »
I've always shown Jethro Coomber as my paternal g/grandfather despite knowing that my grandmother's birth certificate showing her as Edith Mary Cocks( her mother's maiden name) with the father as Charles Cocks and mother as " Elizabeth Anne Cocks formerly Coomber". Yesterday I decided to change Edith's father. This immediately wiped out the whole Jethro Coomber line. Jethro was married and had three older children with Elizabeth and Edith interchanged both surnames registering all three of her illegitimate children Coomber. I know I probably have no blood relationship with him but he did play a significant part in the family so I'll have to rebuild him.

If you  only changed her father and did not delete him, he should still be there as a floater.
Try find in tree.  He should still be in list of all people.

Was he the Jethro Coomber born 1858 in Sussex, St Wilfred's, son of William and Mary Coomber, who wed Elizabeth Ann Cocks in 1882 in Devon? I se Edith was born 1890 in Stoke Damerel in Devon.

As advised the branch is still there, it is just unattached or as stated, a floater.

Hi Coombs. Yes he is.
Hi Comberton. I did search the tree for his name but it had disappeared, showing only his nephew of the same name.

I don't think there is anyway to wipe out a whole line in a tree? In the person's profile, you can go to Edit, Edit Relationships, then add father, search for existing person in tree.

You mentioned three older children with Elizabeth, are they still there?

Yes they are and I've started to resurrect Jethro and the information I've added is all that's there. I have another tree, which is just linear so I can follow his ancestors but not his siblings. I can rebuild it but I don't understand how I managed to lose everything by changing the father of one child

On reflection I have no idea why I bothered to change the father because I'm sure the birth certificate is fictitious as the only Charles Cock I've found is her brother.
