Elizabeth Harriett Chettoe 1872 - 1958 (Obit / Funeral Notice)
« on: Thursday 08 August 24 23:13 BST (UK) »
Hello friends, I have a small lookup request for my dad via me, I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me track down the obituary/funeral notice for my relative:

Elizabeth Harriett Skelton
Married name: Elizabeth Harriett Chettoe
B: 16th April 1872, Crewe, Cheshire, England
D: 26th October 1958, Oswestry, Shropshire, England

My dad seems to remember another relative mentioning a reference to her in a newspaper but he never got to read it so I don’t know if it is an obit or a funeral notice, the location would be Shropshire.

I’ve looked on several of the major family research sites and a few newspaper archives to no avail, so I appeal to my friends here once again with gratitude in advance if anyone is able to help.

(I decided to make this its own post as it was not strictly related to the other thread, hopefully this is ok)

Not seeing any online newspaper coverage for Shropshire from circa 1920 to 1990. (This can be ascertained from looking at county coverage on the BNA or FindMyPast). The most recent coverage is the Shropshire Star (1990s).

If you're in Shropshire try a library or archives. Hopefully they'll have local newspapers from the late 1950s.

Thanks for the response I had a similar result as well I'd kinda hoped maybe somebody knew another place I hadn't tried. I don't live in Shropshire unfortunately, but its an option to explore if I am at some point.

Hi John,

Just read your message about a death notice, I’am some times
at the archives.  Next time I’m able to get there, will take a look
for you.        Not sure if anyone wants the old papers that you
            have to pre order it.

            Best regards,   Billy.

Hi John,

I’am down in the Library, have asked about newspapers and sorry
to say the Shropshire Star started about 1964.
They told me the place to look would be Oswestry Library.

I have taken a few things down, Elizabeth’s
Marriage 27 May 1899.      Elizabeth Harriet Skelton. 26.     John Chettoe,  21.
              1939 REGISTER,
              1911 CENSUS,   Birth Cardiff, Glamorganshire.

Let me know if his links in your search.
             Best regards,   Billy.

I had excellent help from the Local Studies Librarian at Oswestry Library when I was researching my borders' ancestors in the early 2000s. He sent me various photocopies, etc of obits, funeral reports, etc. from the Shropshire Star*. I don't remember any fees but there may have been minimal ones.

I'm not sure what the arrangements are now.

There is also a Family History Group that might help ~

When I lived in the area 1950s/60s, the obits, etc were published in   the Oswestry Advertizer. I thought that it was taken over by The Star but it seems that it still exists.
