Thomas Cotton - Shepshed
« on: Thursday 08 August 24 19:28 BST (UK) »
I’m struggling to find the parents of Thomas Cotton born in Shepshed Leics between 1807/1811.  He married Mary Burgess who was born in Whitwick in 1815. They married c1835 Any help most appreciated.

According to the 1835 marriage license record Thomas was "Thomas jnr" and "Thomas the younger".

His occupation is Farmer. His age is "21 years and upwards".

A bit late but there's a Feb 1817 baptism in Shepshed for a Thomas Cotton to parents Thomas and Jane Cotton. Father's occupation looks something like Farm Work.

Thomas and Ann appear to be on 1841 - both aged 55, living on Sullington [?] Road. He's a farmer and they have  two servants

Thank you it’s quite tricky as there seems to be more than one cotton family in Shepshed at time and for many generations after.  We can say that his father was Thomas Cotton.

Give Thomas jnr seems to be a farmer of a substantial holding, I would think his father is more likely to also be a farmer rather than undertake "farm work" (which is more of an ag lab to me?)

ie points to Thomas and Ann

Thank you for that Sullington Road is still in Shepshed and is in fact one of the oldest roads in the town.  I will look on that census.

According to an 1849 newspaper report, Thomas of Sullington Road was an Insolvent Debtor.
He was described as a small farmer and grazier.
