Janet Couper/Cooper died 16.03.1888 Barnhill Poor House near Glasgow
« on: Monday 05 August 24 13:13 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am seeking further information on the abovenamed lady. I understand that Barnhill Poor House records are at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow and are quite detailed. We are unable to locate a birth record for Janet who was born Janet Hamilton abt 1811 in Hamilton Lanarkshire. Parents on death registration said to be Thomas Hamilton (occ Thatcher) and Johan Hamilton m/s McNab.
Janet married Alexander Cooper June 1836 and we have the Church marriage record for this marriage. The 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881 census consistently lists her place of birth as Hamilton Lanark abt 1809 / 1811. I was wondering if someone is going to the Mitchell Library and could do a look up for Janet Couper/Cooper. If possible looking to confirm year and date of birth and parents names. Unfortunately,  I am in New Zealand. Any help or suggestions much appreciated thanks David

Thank you garnad. Thomas and Ann who married 1805 are a possibility which I will explore.

It may be that we will not find an actual baptism record for Janet in which case this becomes a brick wall which may be solved by the person I am helping taking a DNA test.

1851 census 4 Cadzow St Hamilton
Thomas Hamilton, age 77, widower, former thatcher, born Hamilton
He is with the family of his son –
Thomas Hamilton, age 41, Thatcher, born Hamilton
His wife Mary (Marion) nee Ingles – they were married in 1831 in Hamilton

(It looks as if Thomas Hamilton junior moved to, and died in Wales.)

Another son
Angus Hamilton married Margaret Black in 1834 Hamilton
He died in 1890 in Hamilton. Mother named as Annie McNab

Have you looked at the death certificate for Thomas Hamilton age 87 who died in Hamilton in 1857?

I understand that Barnhill Poor House records are at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow and are quite detailed.

I am under the impression that the existing Barnhill Poor House records start in 1890, which may be too late for your research.

Can you please list all the information on this document.

It appears that perhaps that some children of Thomas Hamilton & Johan/Ann/Annie McNab(b) may not have been baptised.

It is possible that they were baptised, but their baptism was not recorded, or either the record is now lost. This is more common than you might think.

I think the correct parents for your Janet have probably been identified in the census and in the marriage noted above by garngad.

What useful information does Thomas's death certificate give?

It looks as if Janet's mother Ann McNab died between 1841 and 1851, so no death certificate for her, as it is before civil registration.
