George Audley born approx 1761 in New Ross
« on: Saturday 03 August 24 22:04 BST (UK) »
I know that this is a long shot but I would appreciate any help if that is possible.

I have a George Audley who according to "Admiralty" records at the National Archives at Kew in London was born in New Ross. He was probably born about 1761/62 based on 2 references to his age. A third record suggests he was born  later in 1769/70.

George Audley served in the Royal Navy and spent some time in Gibraltar.
He  has a son (Thomas) baptised in Gibraltar in 1814, and George was still in Gibraltar 1834.  The Gibraltar records indicate that in  1834 he was a Widower and a Protestant.
I believe he returned to England in about 1836.
I believe his service in the Royal Navy for 15 years 5 months from 1797 to 1812 ( but there is some uncertainty in this)
He became a Greenwich Pensioner (I believe around 1832) and died on  or about  16th December 1840 at Greenwich , England according to Admiralty Records.
Can anybody help me find the baptism  record of this George Audley and the names of his parents.
Thanks in anticipation of any help
Regards

Why do you say long shot?

If he was CofI, and from New Ross, then parish registers are available at NAI as follows
Baptisms from 1763
Marriages and burials from 1764

So, depends on precisely when he was born, and if he was CofI.

Hi Wexflyer,

Why a long shot; well because I thought that it is unlikely that I would find George's baptism, but at least I have got to try.

Whilst I have some uncertainty as to George's year of birth I think it is most likely to be 1761/62 and therefore just before the records of New Ross exist. The best hope would be   I could find the  baptism of what one could one or more of George's siblings and so assume his parentage.

I know there are other people with the Audley surname at "The Rower" and "Inistioge" in County Kilkenny 5 miles and 10 miles away from New Ross so I have a concern that perhaps he was baptised away from New Ross and the Admiralty Records just state New Ross as that was the nearest large town.

In the  Gibraltar inhabitants list of 1834 George is recorded as Protestant and I believe that  the members of the Audley family in the Rower and Inistioge were  originally C of I. Unfortunately the last person in "The Rower" with the Audley surname past away in 2018. We used to exchange Christmas Cards as we both have the same surname but could never find a common ancestor.

I just found this reference to George Audley in the admiralty records, whilst looking for something else and was hoping I could fit it  into the Audley Family of "The Rower"

I live in England so visiting places within Ireland is not really an option, so any advice as to how to track down the baptism of George Audley would be appreciated.
