Do you have a William Davies in your tree?
« on: Friday 02 August 24 17:45 BST (UK) »
Hi gang!

It turns out my great-grandfather married my great-grandmother as a widower, I'd love to find out who his first wife was.

Good points = He was widowed by the age of 25 so only a small time frame.

Bad points = He's one of many William Davies's, and I can't find him on the 1891 census, although he was likely in the Llanedy area so I've been focusing my research on the Llanelly registration district.

I've made a list of possible civil marriages, and cross referenced it with possible civil deaths, but it still leaves me with 15 or so potential wives.

If you could please check your trees for someone marrying a William Davies 1884-1901 it would be most helpful. Even if they didn't meet an early end, I'd be able to rule them out.

Many thanks  :)

Welcome to rootschat.

It may help us if you give us the full details from his 2nd marriage then we may be able to eliminate some suggestions.

Thank you for the welcome and the reply  :)

He actually had 3 marriages  ::)

He was born in 1875. His father's name and profession will be Morgan Davies, farmer. The family address was Penygarn, Llanedy but he was somewhere else at the age of 15 in 1891 so it could be a different address on documentation. He's back home in 1901 as a widower, 6 months before his 2nd marriage.

But even if you have a different William Davies who married around that time but the bride lived a good long life, it would still help me rule that marriage out from my possibles. Thank you  :)

Do you have him on a census from the 2nd marriage? We need to be certain we are looking for the right person. Were there any children born before the 2nd marriage?

Yes I have him on the 1911 census with his 2nd wife and their children. No children from his first marriage with them. The prior marriage is a surprise, it's generally understood he was married twice not three times.

Looking into whether any children were left with the first wife's family would be my next investigation  :)
