Bennetts, help locating couple
« on: Friday 02 August 24 13:31 BST (UK) »
Hoping one of you wonderful people can offer some assistance. I struggled for years finding where my grt, grt grandmother's sister had disappeared to. I eventually found a marriage certificate which confirmed she had married in 1862. I thought I had cracked it but then the trail again goes cold. The couple are Jane (nee Pearce) and Benjamin Bennett. She was born in 1839-40 Wigston, Leicestershire England and I believe he was from Devon born c1842. They married in 1862 in Islington. I know it is her as her father is correctly named as Henry Pearce, the marriage is in a familiar place and the marriage was signed by a known family member with an unusual name. This family has many connections with Canada although I have no prior proof that this couple emigrated. If anyone can spot them anytime after 1862 I would be so grateful, I cannot find them on the 1871 England census.

Wondering if you first searched for Benjamin without Jane or remarried, as so many women died in childbirth back then. Plus the birth found in 1839 as Pears is highly likely as it matches the other sister's birth registration place as being Blaby, also under various spellings.
Query a bit cryptic, so I'll link to the search in Canada which has more information.

Have you checked GRO online for Bennett births with a mmn Pearce then used any matches to find them in 1871/1881 to see if it's the right parents?

Oh boy, I was really excited that I had been able to find Benjamin and Jane but alas they are not the correct couple. I am going to post what I found about this couple to help with crossing them off the list…I haven’t seen that anyone has posted about this family.

I had first found a burial in Tideswell Derbyshire for…
Ben Bennett of Tideswell
Age 1 year and 2 months
06 Nov 1864
Son of Benjamin and Jane Bennett

A search in the GRO website found this birth…
Ben Turner Bennett
MMName Walcot (not Pearce)
Bakewell RD Sep 1863 (Tideswell is in this district)

FreeBMD marriage for this couple…
Bakewell RD Dec 1855
Benjamin Turner Bennett
On the same page Jane Walcot

For those with access, the image is on ancestry and confirms the couple. Benjamin was a Stone Mason and names his father as Elias. The marriage took place in Tideswell.

So apparently not the Benjamin and Jane that JK is looking for.

The couple being searched for is very well hidden!

Thanks for looking folks. They really are tricky. I thought when I found the marriage it would all fall into place but sadly it just made it more frustrating. I have UK Ancestry membership but not International hence turning to Rootschat. I'll keep searching... I really appreciate all the help.

I have Giles Bennett and his family on the 1841 census with his wife Harriet (nee Baker) and then on the 1851 where she is widowed. Giles died in 1849 (death record). Benjamin is 9 on the 1851 census and not with his mother in 1861. I did find a Benjamin Bennett as a visitor on the 1861 in Portland but it's a bit inconclusive. I then have him on his marriage certificate in 1862 and after that he is pretty elusive.
