Charles Maguire/McGuire/ Hamilton N.E.
« on: Tuesday 30 July 24 21:42 BST (UK) »
I am seeking Civil Records from New Zealand of Charles Maguire (variant) McGuire who arrived New Zealand from Donegal Ireland on 2nd November 1876 on the passenger ship "Orari"

It is believed that he could have had a Son namely Thomas born 1892 and it is believed that Charles may have died Australia in or around 1918,

I am seeking the Marriage of Charles sometime between his arrival 1876 and birth of Son Thomas in 1892.

I would really appreciate any leads or information and many thanks for your interest.

You have not said when Charles McGuire was born. Without knowing a year of birth, it is just guess work, when trying to do a search.

This is the death for a Charles McGuire in 1918
1918/17213   McGuire   Charles   90Y

Search for records here
https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz

There is no birth in 1892 for a Thomas McGuire with a father named Charles.
Are you looking at an unsourced tree on Ancestry? Best to avoid doing that!

Just pinning a few things in this thread so others don't have to cover the same ground.

In the NZ Births, Deaths, and Marriages Historical records there appears to only be one birth of a Thomas Mcguire in 1892:

1892/13945   McGUIRE   Thomas   Bridget   Patrick

There are no Thomases for MAGUIRE in this same timeframe.

For the marriages of any 'Charles' McGuire between 1876 and 1893 there is:

1878/3001   Emily Annie   Smith   Joseph Charles   McGUIRE

This latter couple had a child:

1879/11919   McGUIRE   Mary Elizabeth   Emily Annie   Joseph Charles

There are no Charles MAGUIRE marriages.

This is the Immigration record relating to the Charles on the Orari https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FS14-76L

Charles is listed as 34 years with a birth date of 1842.

His passage was part of the Assisted Immigration/Emigration scheme.

Might the Charles you are seeking have exited NZ fairly promptly for Australia?

Does your Charles have a middle name?

To illustrate the Australian possibility ... there is a Charles McGuire who died in NSW, Australia in 1888 that had a birthdate of 1842.

Thank you so much for your contact.

The additional information that the family have is that Charles died Te Aroha Hamilton New Zeland on date in August 1918.

Thay have also found Probate (Will) document which was made in Hamilton also around 5th of August 1918 just days before death.

As he had a Son Thomas born 1892 I was searching for a Marriage record before 1892 which may have detailed his Fathers name in Ireland.

Again thank you and appreciated.

The Charles McGUIRE that Neale1961 found appears to be the only one in New Zealand between 1876 and 1919.

His date of death is 4 August 1918.

However this Charles McGUIRE would have been born in 1828 (or earlier; as the papers note him as 94 but BDMH have him as 90).

There is a death for a MAGUIRE in 1916 but this fellow was a lot younger than the person you are looking for.

How sure are the family that the Charles in Te Aroha, and the will are the family they are looking for.  What connection do they have backward or forward?

The Thomas McGUIRE mentioned in the will of Charles McGUIRE may be this one:
https://ndhadeliver.natlib.govt.nz/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?dps_pid=IE10765229

If so, the mother is 'Don't know'.

The Cenotaph record notes a direct descendant that may be able to be connected with?

Or this Thomas McGUIRE was also born 1892:

Greetings from the Waikato.

I have no knowledge if this family have any connection to your quest, but the father and son in the attached clip are local identities. They served their dairy farming community, on the outskirts of Hamilton city, for two generations, until each retired.
