Dosset family of Windrush
« on: Monday 29 July 24 18:08 BST (UK) »
Hi,

My 3rd gt-grandmother was Leah Dosset(t) of Windrush, baptised in 1820. The baptism record is quite clear and she took her Dosset surname from her mother, Mary Dosset, who was born in 1787, rather than the late 1790s, as she also had another illegitimate child, James Dosset, in 1811.

Ancestry keeps telling me that Leah's father was Thomas Dosset. Many of their family trees say this, without any justification , as far as I can see. I think that there were at least two Thomas Dossets living in the area at that time.

Is anyone knowledgeable of the Dosset family, please?

Gordon

Do your own research - don't use info from other peoples trees unless you have checked it out yourself.

Ancestry hints are just that - hints.  It is up to you to determine their validity in relation to your own FH

The baptismal record for Leah shown no fathers name.  It's possible she "created" Thomas when she married.  Many illegitimate children made up a fathers name when they married so as to appear "respectable"  They either picked any christian name or used a relatives name.

Father's name and occupation are left blank on her marriage record.

So what actual proof is there that her father was Thomas?

When an illegitimate child shows a father on her marriage cert with the same surname - it's usually odds on he was fictional

As Leah showed no father on her marriage to Charles Mason - there was no Thomas

Probably Joseph Dosset bapt 27 Mar 1814 Windrush, is another of her illegitimate sons. (Single mother is named Ann Dosset on baptism, but she may have been Mary-Ann.)

Joseph and James are together in the same household in 1841 census in Windrush.

Joseph Dosset married in 1848 to ELizabeth Mason. You could look at his marriage record to see who he named as his father. It could be a made-up name though, so tread carefully.

James Dosset married ELizabeth Harris in 1844 - again have a look at the marriage record to see what father is recorded.

Looking at Ancestry trees for information is not a sensible choice. Sadly, many trees on Ancestry are carelessly researched or just a series of errors copied from someone else. If there are no records / documents to substantiate the claims on these trees, then you must ignore them. Very often the "hints" from Ancestry originate from these errors made on people's trees.

Exactly, then the errors continue on Ancestry "Thrulines" and "Common Ancestors", as  well as their "Hints", which makes them quite worthless.

It is possible to make an accurate tree. It just takes time, care and detailed research, and lots of checking.
Some people want "instant" family trees, rather than accurate ones.

I saw Ann Dosset, whom you mention. I thought that it was more likely that she was Hannah Dosset, daughter of Richard, baptised at Burford on 20th Mar 1791.

There was a Thomas Dosset, son of Richard, baptised at Burford, on 25 Dec 1770. I think this is the Thomas that people regard as Leah's father, despite him being 50 in 1820 (possible, but unlikely, I would have thought).
