Joseph Burton - Dunchurch
« on: Sunday 28 July 24 22:06 BST (UK) »
Another one I've been stuck on for the longest time.

Joseph Burton of Dunchurch, died 1841 aged 66 years (c. 1775). Present at the death was his wife Ann Burton (nee Cosby), who were married 1 Apr 1806 at Dunchurch. Ann was seemingly from Ryton on Dunsmore.. father John Cosby, wife Mary, baptised 1784.

Joseph's parents, not a clue. Witnesses at the marriage were Thomas Burton and Catherine Cooper.

I've chased several leads in the area (mainly around Thurlaston) but I've never found anything solid. I must admit, it has been a while since I last looked at it; appreciate any fresh eyes. There does appear to be quite a few Burtons in the area, so I'm hopeful.

If they followed naming patterns the first son is Benjamin 1807 usually named for the paternal grandfather.

Second son John 1808 named for maternal grandfather (mothers name as Hannah)

Third son Joseph  1810- named for his father

First daughter Catherine,  ( named for the witness at their wedding?)

Hi
Well this is a tough one.
I have either
Joseph and Benjamin  bapt Bishops Tachbrook 23/26 Sep 1776 sons of James Burton and Mary Gilbert who married at Newbold on Avon 14.10.1776 .Bondsman William Cooper.
James is the carpenter who dies 1778 leaving a Will but no mention of Benjamin or Joseph.Wife Mary and sons Richard and James, from his first marriage to Sarah Smith 27.5.1757 Dunchurch.

The other following Thomas Burton widower who married Susannah Robins 1819 Dunchurch ,was bapt 24.5.1763 at Newbold s of Christopher  and Mary. But there is a gap between their children 1773-1777 and no Joseph .They are of Thurlaston.

I can't track Catherine Cooper.

I reached a similar conclusion to ciderdrinker.

I note Joseph & Ann’s youngest son was James, so have you considered below what appears to be Twins.

Joseph Borton Baptism 26 Sep 1776 Bishop's Tachbrook
James, Mary

Benjamin Borton Baptism 26 Sep 1776 Bishop's Tachbrook
James, Mary

It then appears they may have moved to Thurlaston, Dunchurch.
William Burton Baptism 30 Nov 1777
Dunchurch James, Mary

James Burton Burial 4 Jan 1778 Dunchurch
Abode Thurlaston, no age.

Bishops Tachbrook, is 12 miles (20 Km) SW of Dunchurch, Warwickshire

I’m glad for once that I hadn’t been needlessly stuck on this for over four years now!

I’ve definitely looked into James and Mary before but hadn’t found the baptisms from Bishop’s Tachbrook. It’s not too far away so I think it’s a possibility. I remember the baptism for William Burton in Dunchurch in 1777 with abode of Thurlaston and reading Jame’s will, with as you mention no mention of Joseph. I did check when the will was written but it was in 1777.

I mean the fact that we have a Benjamin & Joseph Burton (born 1776) is promising in of itself. Joseph and Ann’s first two children are Benjamin (b. 1807) and Joseph (b. 1810).

The bondsman is interesting in the marriage that ciderdrinker found as it matches the second name of the witness.

Joseph Burton (d. 1841) was a labourer formerly a X (sadly I can’t read this). His first son does become a Sawyer though, so woodwork related.

I see you have found another James and Mary Colin, I’ll be sure to track this one back too.
Progress, better than what I had!

EDIT: There appears to be a marriage record in Dunchurch for James Burton and Mary Gilbert too. James Burton OTP widower and Mary Gilbert OTP of Newbold Upon Avon were married in this church by licence 16th Oct 1776 - also means these children were born out of wedlock?

Though when I look for Richard Burton, "Richard son of James and Mary Burton of Thurlaston was baptised Dec 2nd 1764" Dunchurch. Although with James (b. 1761) I do get Sarah.

Good morning
The James Burton and Mary Gilbert marriage gives James as a widower and Mary as a spinster. So the earlier baptism with a Sarah could be his first wife.
James Burton Carpenter married Sarah Smith at Dunchurch 27.3.1757.
Again James makes a x.

I cannot find any further information on the family below, no more children born there, no burials and no marriages of the names below.

James Borton of Wolston to Mary Lee otp, 21 Jul 1776 Bishop's Tachbrook
Both signed X. Witnesses Edward & Ann Watts.

Joseph Borton Baptism 26 Sep 1776 Bishop's Tachbrook
Benjamin Borton Baptism 26 Sep 1776 Bishop's Tachbrook

There is another James and Mary at Filllongley, some 16 miles north of the above, they had 5 children there 1782-1796, they also were buried there. The 6 year gap between baptisms may be an issue but I cannot find a better fit.

I did find this marriage for Joseph but nothing clear for Benjamin.

Joseph Burton to Elizabeth Lowe 19 Jun 1799 Coventry, Holy Trinity.
Both otp, he signed, Elizabeth x
Witnesses: Thomas (looks like LEE) & Wm Gregory (he signed others)

Amended

Since Charles' middle name is Lee, I'm leaning towards the James Borton marriage 1776 at Tachbrook
