Since Charles' middle name is Lee, I'm leaning towards the James Borton marriage 1776 at Tachbrook

I'm afraid I'm lost as to where this fits in :(

There's certainly a hive of activity going on around Dunchurch -10/+10 years of Joseph's birth. Taken from the parish registers at Dunchurch:

  • 1767 Sarah d. of James & Sarah Burton of Thurlaston Bapt. Bur.
  • 1768 Richard Burton, publican of Thurlaston Bur.
  • 1768 Susanna d. of Richard & Elizabeth Burton of Thurlaston Bapt.
  • 1769 William s. of James & Sarah Burton of Thurlaston Bur.
  • 1769 Judith d. of Richard & Elizabeth Burton of Thurlaston Bur.
  • 1770 John s. of James & Sarah Burton of Thurlaston Bapt. & Bur.
  • 1770 John Burton, farmer, of Thurlaston Bur.
  • 1771 Judith d. of Richard & Elizabeth Burton of Thurlaston Bapt.
  • 1771 Ann d. of Richard & Elizabeth Burton of Thurlaston Bur.
  • 1772 William Burton of Thurlaston Bur.
  • 1773 Sarah Burton of Thurlaston Bur.
  • 1776 James Burton widower otp & Mary Gilbert of Newbold on Avon Mar.
  • 1777 William s. of James & Mary Burton of Thurlaston Bapt. (Nov 30th)
  • 1778 James Burton of Thurlaston Bur.
  • 1779 Sarah Burton widow Bur.
  • 1780 Elizabeth ille. d. of Elizabeth Burton of Thurlaston Bapt.
  • 1781 Mary Burton of Thurlaston Bur.
  • 1782 Mary d. William Burton of Thurlaston Bur.
  • 1786 William s. of James & Mary Burton Bapt.
  • 1786 Elizabeth d. of Richard & Lydia Burton Bapt.

Seems pretty conclusive that James first marriage to Sarah Smith lines up, with Sarah dying in 1773 and James dying in 1778. I wonder what happened to Mary Burton? Maybe she's the death in 1781? Anyway there's no will for Mary d. 1781.

What I don't get here with either record is Sarah dies, why the baptisms at Bishop's Tachbrook? Surely this only makes sense if James moves to Wolston, which is admittedly quite close to Dunchurch, marries Mary Lee and then they move back?

But then they'd be two James & Mary Burton's in Dunchurch (because of James OTP marries Mary Gilbert in Dunchurch records), which doesn't appear to be the case?

Either way Joseph Burton makes his way back to Dunchurch...

I am beginning to wonder if there's any burials for James/Mary Burton near Bishop's Tachbrook.

I think I'm more confused now than when I started.

As I mentioned in my post on the couple below, no more baptisms, no burials in Bishop's Tachbrook.

Marriages,
Mary Lee to James Borton 21 Jul 1776 Bishop's Tachbrook

Banns
Mary Lee to James Borton 14 Jul 1776 Wolston

I cannot find a suitable baptism for James but I wonder if this is Mary and her family.

Thomas LEESE married Elizabeth WARD 6 Jan 1744 Bishop's Tachbrook both otp.

Thomas, Elizabeth Baptisms Bishop's Tachbrook
Mary Lees  26 Jun 1757

Also. Anne Leese 31 Mar 1745
Elizabeth Lees 11 Oct 1747
Thomas Lees 30 Mar 1752

No marriages for the above three at Bishop's Tachbrook, plenty elsewhere.

Record states a woman?
Elizabeth Lees Burial 21 Oct 1761 Bishop's Tachbrook

Thomas Lees Burial 18 Apr 1785 Bishop's Tachbrook, a pauper died 16 April

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

I guess the baptism you mention is possible but I’m not convinced without some later information?

I note the tree on Ancestry for Jonathon Burton (1717-1755) & Sarah Breton possible death below. The owner of the tree has the marriage of James to Mary Lees and the baptisms of Joseph & Benjamin but nothing else.

Sarah BURTON
Burial16 Sep 1771 Widow
Wolston: St Margaret: Parish Register

The only death I can see for Jonathon in the year noted on the tree below?

Family Search.
Burial 10 January 1755 Stretton-upon-Dunsmore

The BMD parish records on Ancestry 1725 – 1812, end abruptly in 1749?

The marriage licence at Brinklow for Jonathon states he was of Wolston and Sarah of Anstry.

This was in you original post, it might be worth looking at it again. What if he named his eldest son after his twin brother and the second son after his father?
