Thank you - do you have any idea about the code below the 240?

Not sure last number might be a 7
All the codes on 1911 census are 3 digits
007 Clerkenwell
057 Bury
Here's the list from F M P

As you've not given a name have you looked for the person on the 1901 census to see what pob is given?

Thank you for your trouble! It is a long story (it always is!); I am trying to find the sister of Abraham Adam Schiff who was a Jewish immigrant to the UK in 1908. I only discovered that he had a sister by chance when I was looking at a passenger list for his trip to the USA in 1919 - the list shows the name of the nearest relative living in England - sister Mrs Fanny Sheriff17 Middleton Sq., London N.
I have not been able to find anything out about her so was trying a trawl of the 1911 census and found a Fanny Sherriff. The Schiff family were originally from Russia so I was looking to see if any of the Fanny Sherriff or Sheriff were from Russia.

Having looked at the original I don’t think it’s a number at all.
I think it’s ‘do’ i.e. ditto,, the vertical line indicating that it applies to the three people enumerated below the head of household.

There is in 1921 a Fanny Schiff transcribed as SCLIFF on Findmypast born Minsk, Russia. Is it possible that the 1919 transcript should read Schiff not Sherriff.

Thank you Jenny B and softly softly!
Jenny B's suggestion would rule out the person I am looking for.
Softly softly's 1921 census find is interesting; the 1919 document I referred to is (I think) an original typed passenger list and if it should read Schiff I can't explain why she is "Mrs" and not "Miss". Looks like my brick wall is yet to fall - but thank you all so much for your input!
