Name on 1851 Census
« on: Thursday 25 July 24 22:57 BST (UK) »
Relevant link

I am completely unable to read this. From the handwriting on the rest of the page it seems to me to read Samuel again. Or Lemuel? Was it a case of dittography?

I would appreciate any help on this.

Kind regards,
Sessylt

The link goes to the Anc$stry site.  Many of us will not be able to read the link for further clues becasue of this. Do you have a reference so we can access it through other means please?   Eg is it the English or US Census?

To me it looks like Samuel.  There is a tip on this board to read difficult writing upside down.  Perhaps you could try doing that? I have done this in the past and it is a good tip.  It apparently disentangles the brain from seeing something that may not be there or feeling that it cannot see any name it at all

Household schedule number   25
Piece   2175
Folio   440
Page number   10

It is a step-daughter.

The name above is Samuel and the first letter isn’t the same.
J? Although other J s on the page are more open.

Something like Jemimah?

Thanks mckha489.

Clearly it makes a difference if the person is female and not male  ;)  A bigger snip is always useful too.

Edited to add:

What do the refs apply to please?  I am floundering around on Family Search looking for this census and cannot see where you'd use the ref numbers you've given?

Looking at the versions of J & S- capital S in Samuel (Lemuel) looks more like an L which are also all over the place... but middle looks like the m in Samuel - so agree it looks to be Jemiuh (Jeniah?) - If it wasn't a Samuel just before her entry I might have guessed Semiuh?  With some extra strokes in many "r" & some open topped "a" one might have to put this one down to bad guesses, ears & penmanship.

Adding Don't see any of this bunch anywhere in 1861, but perhaps they were in transit, as Samuel appears to have 2 more half-brothers in 1871 Cleator Moor, Cumberland.
