Chas Dickinson photographer was working in Port Elizabeth about 1882 -1887.

If this is the time period The person I think it could be was born in 1835 so he would be around 60s or so and he died in 1916 at 84 years of age. So that would most likely fit.
However I am unsure now if Jim is saying the card design does not fit 1890's

OK. My best estimate is mid-late 1870's but could be into the early 80's
depending on how up to date he dressed.
He looks 65-70 to me.

Thanks Jim

So then its unlikely to be the man I think it is unless he aged really badly.
But from other photos I have noticed the people did age quite badly at the time

Not sure if I am just pulling at straws to try and make it fit hahaha  :P ;D

Whether this is 1870's or 80's & he's aged badly he still
isn't someone born in the 1830's.
Beware of confirmation bias says he.

I agree :) I definitely do not think its him as well. I was just hopeful

So he would have been born in the 1820's or so?

Thank you so much for the help and assistance

I would suggest a birth of around 1810-20.

The old man looks well dressed, but must be 80 or well into his 70's.
If the photo was taken in South Africa, he may have died there. Were there lots of family ancestors in Port Elizabeth?
Milligan - Jardine – Glencross – Dinwoodie - Brown: (Dumfriesshire & Kirkcudbrightshire)
Clark – Faulds – Cuthbertson – Bryson – Wilson: (Ayrshire & Renfrewshire)
Neale – Cater – Kinder - Harrison: (Warwickshire & Queensland)
Roberts - Spry: (Cornwall, Middlesex & Queensland)
Munster: (Schleswig-Holstein & Queensland) and Plate: (Braunschweig, Neubruck & Queensland & New York)

Hi there

Yes I have a number of relatives/ ancestors from PE.
I have a number of photos from the same photo studio of which 4 of them are labelled and they are exactly the same shape and design as this image. So I have a feeling it is the father but the father was born in the 1830's so it is just not fitting. So it is most likely someone else I guess
