Joseph Habersham 1728-1796

Joseph Habersham born 1728 ,Beverley E Yorks, married Carolina Moore in London 1755. Carolina died 1759 after the birth of third child.
In 1774 he is living in Tarrant Gunville, Dorset, and then remarries  Sarah Rogers . They have a son , James 1783.   Joseph was my wife's 5th great grand uncle.
James marries Harriet Mead  nee Greenstock,, a widow of Stalbridge  . Harriet Mead (born 1789) was my 3rd great grand aunt.
I have often wondered why Joseph moved to live in rural Dorset following his career in London.

You don’t mention his occupation Jeff, could that have been the reason for his move south?

The only iformation I have on that is that before he moved to London he was a grocer. I believe that the Habershams were traders in London- Joseph's uncle Joseph in particular. rj

Is this his uncle? Was he apprenticed to his uncle? Mentioned in his will?

It was a short last marriage as he died in 1796, Sarah apparently following two weeks later.

There is a Freedom of the City of London for Joseph Habersham son of Daniel Habersham of Beverley a dyer to the city.
Joseph Habersham is a musician.
dated 30 July 1755.
His uncle Joseph died 23 may 1755 leaving Joseph a very rich man.
In the Will -Joseph's brother john gets £20 plus whatever Joseph owed him.
Joseph juniors 3 sisters got £50 each.
nephew James H of Georgia £20 ,niece Mary Bagworth wife of Christopher of Whitby F50 ,Ralph Clay who married niece Elizabeth £50.
But Daniel and his son Joseph got £300.
They split the South Sea annuities until Daniel died then Joseph got the lot.
So if Daniel died 20.9.1769 at Beverley ,then Joseph got the annuities to himself. Plus who knows what Joseph got in the PCY Will from his father?
Who wants to be a struggling minstrel in London when you can retire to the countryside?

Daniel and John Haberhsam were dyers and  uncle Joseph was a grocer so it does seem a bit weird your joseph was a musician but its definitely him.Did he move to London hoping Uncle Joseph would look after him? Well he certainly did.

His Dad's will would  be worth a look.

Just renewing my acquaintance with this  family I noticed this morning that another Habersham had appeared on a family line which I am following. Ann Habersham married John Jean(e)s at Stalbridge on Christmas Day (1798 or 1800) depending on which sorurce you are looking at. Is this another link with the previously mentioned Joseph (Tarrant Gunville) or a different line. It does seem a little unusual for the same name to appear from afar, so to speak (Beverley and London) in a fairly remote corner of Dorset.

The 1851 census for Ann Jeans gives her as born 1779 Stalbridge.
There is a baptism at Sturminster newton that would fit nicely
Ann Habersham d of Joseph and Sarah 23.4.1780.
He is of course your Joseph who remarried Sarah Rogers in 1774.
