Joseph Ernest Jones CLAY:
« on: Saturday 20 July 24 15:05 BST (UK) »

Joseph Ernest Jones CLAY was born on 23/02/1842 in Pas-de-Calais, France, but spent most of his life in Leicestershire, some in Belgrave Parish, where he worked as a Chimney Sweep.   He was the son of Thomas CLAY and his wife Louisa (nee JONES).

I have managed to document fully his fairly extensive convict career through to the 1870''s.  However, sadly, I have been unable to uncover any details after the 1881 Census, including his marriage prior to that date, any children and his eventual death.

I wonder if someone can help please.

Thank you

I notice virtually all your posts relate to people with criminal convictions/deportations - 566 posts.

Can you tell us what purpose all the extensive info provided by RC members is put to?

Do you have an online searchable database that people can access if they find an ancestor with a criminal conviction or one who was deported?

My interest in RootsChat began with "Parkhurst Boys" transported to Australia/NZ and the complimentary research that resulted, that is, my producing details from the UK to be dovetailed in return with details from "down under".   This system produced nearly 2,000 short biographies free-of-charge for descendants to use as they wish.   This type of reciprocity has since been applied successfully to the UK, although only in cases where my research is exhausted and RootsChatters prove a reliable backstop.

My work is maintained exclusively on a private basis to keep the research managable, no public databases, for instance, although a general topic enquiry could be placed on RootsChat I assume.

The biographies etc., with prior agreement, are to be made available eventually to The National Archives.

Unfortunately - unless there is an online searchable database it's unlikely to be known about or of help to others.

How are these biographies known about or accessed?  Just wondering if we had some sort of reference we could make it known in relevant posts which may help others.

My interest was based purely on your own posts but I appreciate you may also respond to "convict" related threads with any info available from your own database.

My interest in the Clay family is with Isabella, his sister; Joseph is with her 1881.

She did not marry my relative Thomas Hurst, they had 3 children registered as Clay, all had the middle name Hurst and 1861 census has them as Hurst.

I''ll see if I can find anymore and I do have a copy of his birth in France if it helps at all.

Good Evening willsy,

Thank you for the two marriages information.   I am very grateful.   It looks as though Joseph Ernest CLAY may have died before 1885 and more solid research is needed now.

I notice your interest in the Clay family and wonder if you would like a copy of the narrative that I will write for Joseph, hopefully in the next week.

willsy,

I forgot to mention that on the night of the 1881 Census Joseph Ernest CLAY was visiting his sister Isabella.........RG11/3154/49, p.36.
