The death record would seem to be the correct one.

Thomas was living on Butcher Street 1871 aged 57 widowed Naval Pensioner born Gibraltar.

Based on his reported birth date 1814 and his age (49) on the 1863 marriage, on the 1861 census he should be 47.
Perhaps Ellen didn't know how old he was.

Hi amondg,
Many thanks for all your additional information particularly about the Cole family.

However I am more interested in Thomas Audley.

The record I would now like to identify is where and when Sarah Audley (nee Mc Lean) died and was buried. Sarah Mc Lean being the first wife of Thomas Audley. They married in Portsea on  20th June 1856 and she must have died prior to 5th October 1863 when Thomas Audley married  for a second time to Elizabeth Cole at Portsea and is  described as a widower.

Many Regards

Get a copy of his death certificate and see who reported his death.
