James Reed 1868-1943, Gateshead
« on: Monday 15 July 24 01:18 BST (UK) »
I would appreciate any help in tracing James Reed (1868-1943), the son of Thomas Fenwick Reed (1830-1906) and Margaret (Margaretta) Jane Harbottle (1829-1877).  I have not found him in the 1891 and 1901 censuses.  In the 1911 census, he is listed in Gateshead with a wife Jane Ann (Longstaff), born 1878, and children Sidney age 13, Eveline (Evelyn) age 7, Arnold age 2, and Ruth Winifred 4 months.

I have not found a marriage record for the couple or a birth registration for Sidney under Reed or Longstaff.  Sidney, born 16 June 1897, and Arnold are listed with their widowed father James in Gateshead in the 1939 England and Wales Register.  His wife/partner seems to have died in Gateshead in 1930 listed as Jane Ann Reed.  The 1901 census has Jane Ann living with her siblings and father Matthew Longstaff (1847-1907) in Gateshead.  With them is a visitor Sidney Longstaff, age 3, who might be the illegitimate son of Jane and James Reed.

Many thanks.  Oddly, I cannot find this on Ancestry, which, unless I have missed it, only seems to have enumeration districts 1-6 for South Shields in the 1891 England Census.

They have missed out page 7 altogether, it goes from page 6 to page 8.  Put the reference in - Piece: 4166  Folio: 41 Page: 6  and when you go to the next page it is 8, not 7.

1901 census - Staith Terrace, Winlaton, Durham

Sydney Longstaff (visitor, age 3) in the household of Matthew and Margaret Longstaff.

Always a chance that James isn't the father.

Given that James hasn't been located yet in 1901 could he be in South Africa (Boer War)?
There's an 1898 service record for a James Reed (age 28, birthplace Jarrow), but he's a labourer and signs with his mark. So, probably not your James.

Thanks Debra.  This confirms the street.  I am surprised that Ancestry missed the page out.  A search on Find My Past has it, but without a subscription I cannot know for sure.

FindMyPast - 1891 - 43 Croft Terrace, Jarrow.

James Hall with wife, Mary Alice and son James Basil.  Plus Isabella Harbottle, sister-in-law and James Reed, nephew, aged 22 (Ship Draughtsman).

Thanks BumbleB.  The Halls were still there in the 1901 England Census but not James Reed.

Could his birth be registered as William Longstaff  ???
