Would you be willing to share details of those tools you mentioned?

These are command line tools that are operated by typing in commands to a DOS-like interface. I don't know if that makes sense.

There was a website that used to do much of this, but Ancestry forced them to shut down.

Hopefully Ancestry will soon list all the shared matches down to 8cM. They are working on a big site update and one feature that is planned is 64 groups -

The price they are charging for these new pro tools, they should really offer a tool that shows common ancestors of matches. They could also extend that to their guesstimated extensions of their trees. Ancestry group people in trees based on what they believe are the same individual. Tapping into that would not be difficult.

Thanks for your extra information 4b2. I am familiar with the command line in Windows but don't know how to use that to access a website like Anc. I presume you are using a software tool with a DOS like interface rather than the Windows command line?

I managed to run a handful of cluster diagrams before Anc closed down Genetic Affairs access

Another way of looking at DNA matches, and THEIR matches, and matches of matches, and beyond is to use a network analysis tool, Gephi (Graphical Environment Partition Hierarchy Interface).  It takes the match and 'in common with' data files and displays the matches as a network.  You can configure EVERYTHING.  Node size, number of matches, cluster sizes, number of clusters etc etc.

Here's one I prepared earlier, with the match names removed in favour of match size.  (I never understand the 'remove names' concept.  Surely I'm allowed to say who I'm related to?  And how does anyone know if the names are real or not?)

Anyway, the '463' is a distant cousin to me.  You can click and drag nodes, or groups of nodes to make it all clearer, change colours and zoom in/out.

Do buy and read the book that I suggested in my prior post.

Learning the ins and outs of DNA will help you to understand how DNA is passed on and what tools do what.

DNA is inherited by a process called Recombination, it is what makes each of us unique unless we happen to be identical twins.

The image following is a simplified version of how the process works.

If you want to learn about the technicalities of DNA this is probably the defacto standard.

The free Future Learn course on DNA is presented by the editor and author of the book, he is Principal Tutor at Strathclyde Uni.

Yes. It's a Youtube proxy - to avoid giving your data to Google.

Could you explain what the chart shows?

4b2, I said it all in my first line. I tried to copy and paste, but it wouldn't.
