Comments on Ancestry.
« on: Thursday 11 July 24 13:51 BST (UK) »
Over several years I have left comments on other people's trees. Is there any way I can check these out to see if there have been replies to any of them. I only seem to find them by accident.

once upon a time (as with all fairy tales) Ancestry used to inform you when a comment was put on your tree but that has gone by the board, so unless the tree owner messages you or you keep a notebook it doesnt seem to be anyway. Trouble is you never know if someone has put a comment on any of your trees so many dont get seen either!

Mmm. Thankyou for the replies. I cannot remember where I posted the comments and I didn't keep a notebook 😂. So another useless feature. I mainly post a comment when something is incorrect so hopefully anyone coming across the information is not copying rubbish. So many online trees have named my great grandfather's dad. He was illegitimate!

I agree it's annoying not to get notifications when comments are posted. Over the years I have posted a lot of comments, usually providing the correct information. I have never attempted to keep a record, but occasionally something crops up years later and and draws me back to a tree I have left comments on, then I find the tree owner has posted a either a thank you or sometime asking if I can give them any more information. They must think I have ignored them.

I usually only bother with sensible sized trees, not those with many thousands of names.

Your lucky Jebber getting a reply I have left several comments and only one person replied .They said they would correct their information needless to say they didn't  ::)..I think it was a lot better years ago when ancestry would notify you someone had left a comment

Rosie, I have on occasions found one of my relatives on a tree to which they have no connection other than the same common name. I have gone to the trouble of researching their person and provided them with all the references to check for themselves. Only to be told they know  their facts were correct. You can't convince some people no matter how politely you do it.

I have one person in my tree born in Essex, married in Essex and can be found in all the census. Plus I have had contact with her descendant.  Yet someone has her married and living in Dorset. I researched the Dorset namesake, found her birth in Dorset and in all the census after her marriage her birthplace as given as Dorset. That didn't convince the tree owner.

Another tree has one of my great grandfathers born in Dorset, apparently taking a fly trip to America in the  1800s  having a family there at the same time as having a family in Dorset , had that been the case I would not exist.

I could go on with a long list of similar errors, it is a waste of time trying to help someone if they can't accept they made a mistake. Personally I would much rather be told if I have slipped up, than  continue wasting time and money adding the wrong person to my tree. We are all human and no one is infallible.  :)
