Grizel Evans death
« on: Wednesday 10 July 24 11:40 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find a death record for Grizel ( note there are numerous spellings) Evans born Grizel McFie circa 1780, Kingarth, Bute, Scotland. She married her husband, James Evans 27th January 1803, Rothesay, Bute, Scotland. James Evans died June 15th 1856, Duntocher, Old Kilpatrick aged 81 and described as a widower, so Grizel died before 1856

She died before 1851 because husband James is a widower in the 1851 census.

Have you tried looking for her death on Scotland's People? For pre-1855 events search in the Church Registers collection.

1841 census intimates he was a widow, he's with 5 Evan children.

Is this worth a check ?

Noticed an ancestry tree (mentioned in 35 ancestry trees)  for Grace McFie - on the 1871 census 10 William Street. Greenock Middle. Renfrewshire. Could she have reverted to maiden name ??

Grace McFie   86
Mary   76

Gave this as a baptism record - date slightly different to yours !!

Grizel Macfie - Birth Date   24 Jul 1786
Baptism Date   27 Jul 1786   Rothesay,Bute,Scotland
Father   Robert Macfie
Mother   Grizel Mackirdy

Looks like the death for this one is 1878 - maybe not yours -  :'(

MCFIE GRACE - 80 - DUNCAN - 1878
558 / 184 ROTHESAY

Her husband was apparently a widower in 1841, 1851 and 1856, so probably not.

If there are 35 trees on Ancestry saying that this Grace McFie is the widow of James Evans it's almost certainly 34 people copying an original error without bothering to check the actual sources; though it could be a smaller number of copycats and more than one original error.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
