John Smith of Nottinghamshire
« on: Monday 08 July 24 17:21 BST (UK) »
In the 1851 census for St Mary, Leicester there is a John Smith born in Nottinghamshire, aged 51 (HO 107/2090, f.635r). He's said to be born in Nottingham and then what looks like 'Hamer'. This doesn't appear to be a place in Notts so could someone with local knowledge suggest where the place of birth could be?

Many thanks
Ruth

SS I think that is the one I looked at first but I think it is the one with ref 107/2090 f635 page 44 (with wife Keziah) who has died by 1861 is the one we are after

Thanks SS. I think you might be looking at a different John Smith (not difficult!) The one I'm after was married to Keziah and she was widowed by 1861.  In 1851 his birthplace is given as Nottingham and then a 4 or 5 letter word. The enumerator doesn't use 'shire' after his county names and puts the county before the parish, so it suggests the second word is a separate parish or a part of Nottingham itself. I can't remember if this site allows snippets of census entries to be posted or not so I didn't include an image.

The first letter does not look like the H in Henshaw Street

Yes you can post snippets but we will always ask for the reference as well so we can compare  ;D

ADDED
It does help to have the page number as well rather than L(eft) or R(ight)  ;D

Hi, it looks like Nottingham, Same to me, possibly with an Under the S, they realised they couldn’t fit Nottingham in on the sheet again.

No - I initially wondered if it was N or possibly W, but then I looked at the previous page and there's Hinckley on the third line from the bottom, and the first letter is the same. So it does appear to be Hamer.

I'd write the reference as HO107/2090 fo635 p44.
