It was usually the bride's family that submitted the engagement announcement to the newspaper so that may explain why his mother wasn't mentioned. An article about the actual wedding may give more detail but it also depends on the usual format of such announcements in that newspaper in that period.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

1953 Voters' List at 764 McDougal Cres. only shows John Gilmore, operator, with no Margaret Enid; however, there is a Mrs. Rose Thompson, housewife, also living in the household.  Margaret may have already passed away or the couple have split.

And finally found Margaret -- Hamilton Spectator, January 20, 1988:
